This bulletin describes a modification which must be made to existing tool J-35856 which must be used when pressure bleeding the brake system. J-35856 "Proportioning Valve Depressor" has been replaced and superseded by J-39177 "Combination Valve Pressure Bleeding Tool" for the Kelsey Hayes combination valve on the above mentioned cars and trucks.
Dealers may order J-39177 to replace J-35856 or modify all J-35856 tools in the following manner (Figure 1).
1. Remove the red plastic handle from the tool.
2. Clamp the tool carefully but securely in a bench vise with the three prongs accessible.
3. File down the raised "dimple" from the center prong until the surface area is smooth.
The removal of the "dimple" is all that is necessary to modify the tool. The attached label should be applied to any modified J - 35856.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
