CAMPAIGN: ENGINE OIL COOLER LINES MAY FAIL

Model and Year: 1985 C/K/G/P MODEL LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AN ENGINE OIL COOLER

TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

General Motore has determined that some 1985 C/K/G/P Light Duty trucks equipped with a gasoline engine or a 6.2L diesel engine that have an engine oil cooler, RPO KC4, may experience failure of the engine oil cooler hose/hoses. During normal operation the hoses may burst, resulting in a rapid engine oil lose which could result in internal engine damage.

To prevent the possibility of this condition ocurring, involved vehicles must be inspected for suspect oil cooler lines and replacement lines installed if necessary.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1985 C/K/G/P Light Duty model trucks equipped with an engine oil cooler. The oil cooler is available on some involved vehicles equipped with gas engines and is standard on P30 Models equipped with a 7.4L engine (RPO LE8) or on 6.2L diesel (RPO LH6 or LL4) equipped vehicles.

The vehicles involved were built within the following plant and VIN break- points.

PLANT MODEL FROM THROUGH ----- ----- ---- ------- Detrolt P F3308157 F3313189 Lordstown G Van F7113572 F7127667 Scarborough G Van F4106076 F4119332 Flint #1 C-K-D FF320076 FF339542 Flint #2 C-K-D FF115048 FF127844 Janseville C-K FJ123335 FJ126924 St. Louis C-K FS115388 FS128599 Oshawa C-K F1136523 F1137392

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complate Vehicle Iden- tification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle regis- tration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin was not shipped any involved vehicles.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin).

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used, vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Inspect both engine oil cooler lines for manufacturing date code (reference the 1985 Light Duty Truck Service Manual, ST-330-85, for cooler line location). Lines marked with a date code of 2654, as shown in Figure No.1 must be replaced. In addition, replace the cooler line if the date code cannot be read or if the date code does not appear on the hose section of the line.

Lines with identification numbers other than above are OK and are not to be replaced.

PARTS INFORMATION

Parts required to complets this modification are to be obtained from General Motors Warehousing and Distribution Division (GMWDD). To ensure that these parts will be obtained as soon as possible they should be ordered from GMWDD on a C.I.O. order with no special instruction code, but on an advise code (2).

IMPORTANT: Defective oil line(s) removed from the involved vehlcles will be retained by the dealer in accordance with the instructions outlined in the dealers current Policy and Procedures Manual.

*Campaign Administrative Allowance.

**The Parts Allowance should be the sum total of the current GMWDD Dealer Net plus 30% of all parts required for the repair.

***The $1.42 in the "Net Amount Column" represents the material allowance for engine oil used in conjunction with all labor operations except V2790.

Dealers will automatically receive the correct labor allowance based on the labor operation performed.

Refer to the Chevrolet Claims Processing Manual for details on Product Campaign Claim submission.

In addition to the normal dealer claim information, a "Claim Information Chart," has been prepared on page 10 to assist Dealer personnel in identi- fying the repair categories of each vehicle involved.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin will require a "Campaign Identification Label." Each label provides a space to include the five digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen.

Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought to for periodic servicing by the owner.

Apply "Campaign Identification Label" only on a clean dry surface.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE

REVER TO THE CURRENT CHEVROLET SERVICE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANUAL AND CLAIMS PROCESSING MANUAL FOR CAMPAIGN HANDLING AND ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES.

Dear Chevrolet Truck Owner:

General Motors has determined that some 1985 C/K/G/P Light Duty trucks equipped with a gasoline engine or a 6.2L diesel engine that have an engine oil cooler, RPO KC4, may experience failure of the engine oil cooler hose/hoses. During normal operation, the hoses may burst, resulting in a rapid engine oil loss which could result in internal engine damage.

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring on your vehicle, please contact your Chevrolet Dealer on or after the date shown below to arrange for a service date. Your dealer will inspect the oil cooler lines and replace them if necessary. This service will be completed at no charge to you.

Instructions have been sent to your Chevrolet dealer. It is estimated that parts will be available August 23, 1985. The labor time to inspect your vehicle is about 10 minutes. If it is necessary to replace the oil cooler lines, it will take approximately one (1) hour longer. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be needed to process your vehicle.

The enclosed Owner Reply Card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist them in making the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid owner reply card and returning it to us. We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
