When replacing front shock absorbers on 1988-89 C3 Trucks, or when removing shocks during service, the upper ball joint seal may contact the frame if the suspension is allowed to fully extend with the shock absorber removed. This condition could result in damage to the seal.
To prevent this, when the vehicle is raised for shock replacement, place a support such as a jack stand, or a transmission jack under the lower control arm to prohibit full extension.
Once the shock absorber is replaced or reinstalled, remove the support to allow free travel.
Refer to Section 3C-12 of the Service Manual for complete shock absorber replacement procedure.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
