Removal Procedure
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the wiring connectors at the side of the ignition coil.
- Disconnect the ignition coil wire.
- Remove the following for the 4.3L:
4.1. | Remove the studs and/or bolts that connect the ignition coil bracket
and the ignition coil to the manifold. |
4.2. | Remove the ignition coil and the ignition coil bracket. |
4.3. | Remove the two rivets that connect the ignition coil to the ignition
coil bracket by drilling and punching them out. |
4.4. | Remove the ignition coil from the ignition coil bracket. |
- Remove the following for the 5.0L and
5.7L:
5.1. | Remove the studs and/or bolts that connect the ignition coil bracket
and the ignition coil to the manifold. |
5.2. | Remove the ignition coil and the ignition coil bracket. |

and the ignition coil to the manifold. |
6.2. | Remove the ignition coil and the ignition coil bracket. |
6.3. | Remove the two rivets that connect the ignition coil to the ignition
coil bracket by drilling and punching them out. |
6.4. | Remove the ignition coil from the ignition coil bracket. |
Installation Procedure
Replacement coil kits come with two screws to attach the new ignition
coil to the ignition coil bracket.
- Install the following for the 4.3L:
1.1. | Connect the ignition coil bracket to the ignition coil with the
screws provided. |
1.2. | Install the ignition coil and bracket to the intake manifold
with the mounting studs/bolts. |
Tighten
Tighten the ignition coil hold-down studs/bolts to 27 N·m
(20 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
1.3. | Connect the ignition coil wire. |
1.4. | Install the ignition coil wiring connectors. |
- Install the following for the 5.0L and
5.7L:
2.1. | Connect the ignition coil bracket to the ignition coil with the
screws provided. |
2.2. | Install the ignition coil and bracket to the intake manifold
with the mounting studs/bolts. |
Tighten
Tighten the ignition coil hold-down studs/bolts to 27 N·m
(20 lb ft).
2.3. | Connect the ignition coil wire. |
2.4. | Install the ignition coil wiring connectors. |
- Install the following for the 7.4L:
3.1. | Connect the ignition coil bracket to the ignition coil with the
screws provided. |
3.2. | Install the ignition coil and bracket to the intake manifold
with the mounting studs/bolts. |
Tighten
Tighten the ignition coil hold-down studs/bolts to 27 N·m
(20 lb ft).
3.3. | Connect the ignition coil wire. |
3.4. | Install the ignition coil wiring connectors. |
