Extension Housing Rear Oil Seal NV3500 RWD

Tools Required

    • J 23907 Slide Hammer
    • J 26941 Output Shaft Seal Remover
    • J 36503 Extension Housing Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  2. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  3. Object Number: 4849  Size: SH
  4. Remove the extension housing oil seal using a J 23907 with the J 26941 .

Installation Procedure

  1. Fill between the seal lips with chassis grease. Use GM P/N 1052497 or the equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 1328  Size: SH
  3. Install a new extension housing oil seal using the J 36503 .
  4. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  5. Install new transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Replacement .

Extension Housing Rear Oil Seal NV3500 4WD

Tools Required

    • J 36825 Output Shaft Seal Remover
    • J 23907 Slide Hammer
    • J 36502 Output Shaft Oil Seal Installer
    • J 36502-2A Output Shaft Oil Seal Protector

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  2. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  3. Object Number: 4781  Size: SH
  4. Screw the J 36825 into one of the three perforated holes in the output shaft oil seal.
  5. Remove the extension oil seal using a J 23907 with the J 36825 .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 4757  Size: SH
  1. Install the J 36502-2A on the output shaft.
  2. Fill between the seal lips with chassis grease using GM P/N 1052497 or the equivalent.

  3. Object Number: 4758  Size: SH
  4. Install the seal using J 36502 .

  5. Object Number: 4757  Size: SH
  6. Remove the J 36502-2A from the output shaft.
  7. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement.
  8. Install new transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Replacement .

Extension Housing Rear Oil Seal NV4500

J 36503 Extension Housing Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  2. Remove the propeller shaft assembly. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  3. Remove the parking brake, if used. Refer to Propeller Shaft Parking Brake in Parking Brake.
  4. Remove the yoke nut and the washers. Refer to Slip Yoke Splines in Propeller Shaft.

  5. Object Number: 102881  Size: SH
  6. Remove the extension housing oil seal.

Installation Procedure

  1. Lubricate the inside diameter of the seal with Castrol Syntorq LT Transmission Fluid or the equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 102884  Size: SH
  3. Install a new extension oil seal using the J 36503 .
  4. Install the yoke.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the yoke washer and the yoke nut.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the yoke nut to 441 N·m (325 lb ft).

  8. Install the parking brake, if used. Refer to Propeller Shaft Parking Brake in Parking Brake.
  9. Install the propeller shaft assembly. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  10. Install new transmission oil in the transmission. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
