Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 188048  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the oil level indicator.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
  5. Remove the oil filter adapter, if equipped. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter and Bypass Valve Assembly Replacement .

  7. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  8. Remove the transmission cover.

  9. Object Number: 327996  Size: SH
  10. Remove the bracket for the transmission cooler pipes from the side of the oil pan, if equipped.

  11. Object Number: 344049  Size: SH
  12. Remove the bolt holding the engine oil cooler pipe clip to the oil pan.
  13. If a Four Wheel Drive vehicle, remove the bolts holding the axle tube and the front differential carrier assembly. Refer to Differential Carrier Assembly Replacement in Front Drive Axle.
  14. Lower the front differential carrier assembly enough to remove the oil pan.
  15. If a rear wheel drive vehicle remove the transmission.
  16. • Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L60-E.
    • Refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - NV 3500.
  17. Remove the engine flywheel (RWD vehicles). Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .

  19. Remove the access plugs for the oil pan rear nuts.

  20. Object Number: 31739  Size: SH
  21. Remove the following oil pan fasteners:
  22. • Remove the ten oil pan bolts.
    • Remove the two nuts at the crankshaft rear oil seal.
    • Remove the transmission to oil pan bolts.
  23. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pump Removal .
  24. Clean and inspect all parts. Refer to Oil Pan Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Installation
  2. Install the engine flywheel (RWD vehicles). Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  3. Install the transmission (RWD vehicles).
  4. • Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L60-E.
    • Refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - NV 3500.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the transmission to oil pan bolts (Four Wheel Drive only).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission to the oil pan bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  7. Install the access plugs for the oil pan rear nuts.

  8. Object Number: 327996  Size: SH
  9. Install the bolt holding the bracket for the transmission cooler pipes. If equipped.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  11. Install the oil filter adapter. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter and Bypass Valve Assembly Replacement .

  12. Object Number: 344049  Size: SH
  13. Install the bolt holding the oil cooler pipe clip to the oil pan.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the clip bolt to 10 N·m (88 lb in).


    Object Number: 334324  Size: SH
  15. Install the transmission cover and bolts.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission cover bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  17. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  18. Install the front differential assembly. Refer to Differential Carrier Assembly Replacement in Front Drive Axle.
  19. Install the oil pan drain plug. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Install the oil level indicator.
  22. Fill the engine with engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  23. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
