This procedure covers the seal and bearing replacement
for the steering gears. The steering gear uses one double lip seal. The seal
may be replaced without removing the power steering gear. Refer to pitman
shaft seal and bearing replacement.
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
• | J 6278 Pitman
Shaft Bearing Remover and Installer |

Shaft Oil Seal Installer |

Snap Ring Pliers |
- Disconnect the pitman arm from the steering gear. Refer to one
of the following procedures in Steering Linkage:
- Clean the exposed end of the pitman shaft and the housing.
- Use a wire brush in order to clean the pitman shaft splines.
- Remove the dust seal.
- Use the J 4245
in order to remove the retaining ring.
Important: Do not score the housing bore when prying out the seals and the washers.
- Use a screwdriver in order to pry the backup washer and the double lip
seal from the housing.
- Inspect the housing for burrs and remove if necessary.
- Insert the J 6278
through the hole in the top of the housing in order to remove the
needle bearing.
Installation Procedure
- Coat the lip seal and the washer with grease.
- Use J 6278
in order to assemble the needle bearing to the housing.
- Install the double lip seal.
- Install the backup washer.
- Use the J 4245
in order to install the retaining ring.
- Install the pitman shaft and the side cover. Refer to

- Install the pitman arm to the steering gear. Refer to one of the
following procedures in Steering Linkage:
