J 42371 Clutch Line Removal Tool

Removal Procedure

  1. Shift the transmission into 3rd or 4th speed gear.
  2. Remove the shift lever. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement .
  3. Remove the shift tower. Refer to Shift Tower Replacement .
  4. Drain the transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  5. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  6. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  7. If equipped, remove the two transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement in Transfer Case - NVG-NP2.
  8. If equipped with a manual transfer case, remove the manual transfer case shift linkage. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement in NV261 - Transfer Case.

  10. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the bolt securing the left side support brace to the transmission.

  11. Object Number: 33180  Size: SH
  12. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the bolt and stud securing the left side support brace to the transfer case.

  13. Object Number: 33134  Size: SH
  14. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the bolt securing the right side support brace to the transmission.

  15. Object Number: 33146  Size: SH
  16. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the bolt securing the right side support brace to the transfer case.

  17. Object Number: 776999  Size: SH
  18. Using the J 42371 , push back on the white plastic sleeve on the quick connect in order to disconnect the clutch actuator cylinder to clutch master cylinder quick connect fitting.
  19. Disconnect the wiring harness and connector from the vehicle speed sensor, backup lamp switch, and transmission harness retainers.

  21. If equipped with a 4.3L engine, remove the two bolts securing the clutch housing cover.
  22. Remove the transmission rear mount.
  23. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.

  25. Remove the bolts securing the bottom right side of the transmission to the engine.
  26. • Bolt (1) secures the clutch housing cover on 4.3L engines only.
    • Bolt (2) is used on engines larger than 4.3L.

  27. Remove the stud securing the right side of the transmission to the engine.

  29. Remove the bolt and six studs securing the transmission to the engine.
  30. Pull the transmission straight back on the clutch hub splines. Do not let the transmission hang from the clutch plate and the clutch cover.
  31. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  32. Remove the clutch plate and the clutch cover from the engine flywheel if required. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement in Clutch.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the clutch plate and the clutch cover to the engine flywheel if removed. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement in Clutch.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the transmission:
  4. 2.1. Ensure the transmission is positioned in the 3rd or 4th speed gear.
    2.2. Rotate the transmission clockwise onto the clutch hub splines.
    2.3. Install the bolt and the studs securing the transmission to the engine.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the stud securing the right side of the transmission to the engine.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the bolts securing the bottom right side of the transmission to the engine.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

    • Bolt (1) secures the clutch housing cover on 4.3L engines only.
    • Bolt (2) is used on engines larger than 4.3L.

  9. If equipped with a 4.3L engine, install the clutch housing cover using the two bolts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

  11. Install the transmission rear mount.
  12. Install the clutch line to the concentric slave cylinder. Refer to Clutch Concentric Actuator Cylinder Replacement in Clutch.

  14. If equipped with a transfer case, install the bolt securing the right side support brace to the transmission.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  16. If equipped with a transfer case, install the bolt securing the right side support brace to the transfer case.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  18. If equipped with a transfer case, install the bolt and stud securing the left side support brace to the transfer case.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).


    Object Number: 33202  Size: SH
  20. If equipped with a transfer case, install the bolt securing the left side support brace to the transmission.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  22. If equipped with a manual transfer case, install the manual transfer case shift linkage. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement in NV261 Transfer Case.
  23. If equipped, installed the two transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement in NV261 Transfer Case or Shield Replacement in NV246 Transfer Case.
  24. If equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  25. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  26. Install the shift tower. Refer to Shift Tower Replacement .
  27. Fill the transmission with transmission fluid. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  28. Install the shift lever. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement .
