Did you perform the Lighting Diagnostic System Check?

Verify the fault is present.

Does the system operate normally?

Go to Testing for Electrical Intermittents in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Push the brake pedal down and inspect the CHMSL.

Does the CHMSL light?

Go to Step 4

Remove and Inspect the VEH STOP fuse. Refer to Testing for Short to Ground in Wiring Systems.

Is the fuse open?

Go to Step 14

  1. Re-install the VEH STOP fuse.
  2. Disconnect C1 at the rear lamps bussing block. for pickup, or C405 for suburban/utility.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the fused CHMSL feed circuit and a good ground.
  4. Depress the brake pedal while looking at the test lamp.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 10

Remove and inspect the STOP LPS fuse. Refer to Testing for Short to Ground in Wiring Systems.

Is the fuse open?

Go to Step 11

  1. Re-install the fuse.
  2. Connect a test lamp from (back probe) between the fused battery feed circuit of the Stoplamp Switch and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 8

  1. Connect a test lamp from (back probe) between the stoplamp switch output circuit and to a good ground at the stoplamp switch.
  2. While probing, push the brake pedal down.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 13

Repair the fused CHMSL feed circuit between the rear lamps and the engine wiring harness junction block. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 16

Repair the open in the ground circuit between the rear lamps and ground. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 16

  1. Repair the short to ground in one of the following circuits. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
  2. • The stop lamp switch output circuit
    • The fused battery feed circuit
    • The LH turn/stop/hazard-trailer
    • The RH turn/stop/hazard-trailer
  3. Replace the fuse.

Repair the open in the fused battery feed circuit between the stoplamp switch and the fuse. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open in the stoplamp switch output circuit between the stoplamp switch and the engine wiring harness junction block. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the short to ground in the fused CHMSL feed circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the stoplamp switch. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
