CAMPAIGN: 700R4 A/T ERRATIC SHIFT - MISS.THROT.VALVE BUSH.

Model and Year: 1984 FULL SIZE CHEVROLET AND CAMARO PASSENGER CARS, C/K10-20, G20 AND S/T10 LIGHT DUTY TRUCK MODELS EQUIPPED WITH RPO MXO

General Motors has determined that some 1984 Full Size Chevrolet and Camaro passenger cars, C/K10-20, G20 and S/T10 Light Duty truck models equipped with a 70OR4 automatic transmission (RPO MXO may have been assembled without a throttle valve bushing in the transmission valve body. A missing bushing can cause erratic shifting. If the transmission continues to be operated in this condition, it could result in premature transmission failure.

INVOLVED INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1984 Full Size Chevrolet and Camaro passenger cars, C/K10-20, G20 and S/T10 Light Duty Truck models equipped with a 70OR4 automatic transmission (RPO MXO) and built within the following vehicle identification breakpoints:

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and addreas data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin was not shipped any involved vehicles.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin).

If the vehicle was inspected and/or modified previously, according to the instructions outlined in this bulletin, owners will not receive a letter.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION NUMBER INSPECTION - (Only a very few vehicles will require a valve body).

1. Inspect each vehicle for transmission identification number, stamped into the right rear oil pan rail.

Example:

2. Vehicles with a transmission Julian build date and shift code of either 209C, 209H, 210A, 210B, 210C, 210H, 212A or 212B must have the transmission valve body inspected to determine if valve body replacement is required.

IF VEHICLE TRANSMISSION IS OTHER THAN ABOVE DATE/SHIFT CODES, NO REPAIR IS NEEDED. Stamp the letter "V" next to the transmission identification number. Install a campaign completion label and release vehicle.

TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY INSPECTION

3. To inspect valve body, remove transmission oil pan and discard oil pan gasket.

4. Locate window (3/8" X 1/2") midway in valve body TV bore, on right side adjacent to TV linkage mounting bracket (See Figure 1). Inspect for presence of throttle valve sleeve (aluminum) at forward end of opening.

IF SLEEVE IS PRESENT, reassemble oil pan with new gasket, IN 8642360, and add five quarts of Dexron II transmission fluid, P/N 1051855, to be procured locally. Stamp the letter "V" next to the transmission identification number to complete service. Install a campaign completion label and release vehicle.

TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY REPLACEMENT

5. IF SLEEVE IS NOT PRESENT, valve body replacement is required. Contact your Zone Office with a complete list of truck VIN's inspected with the corresponding transmission identification numbers. Your Zone Office will make arrangement to ship transmission valve bodies and gaskets required to you at no charge. Five quarts of Dexron II transmission fluid , P/N 1051855, is required for each truck repaired, to be procured locally. Instructions for removal and replacement of the valve body are contained in the 1984 Passenger Car and Light Duty Truck Service Manual.

6. Stamp the letter "V" next to the transmission identification number.

Dealers must verify that supplied valve body year and model number corresponds to tranmsission identification number of truck before installing. Do not order valve bodies from WDDGM. Install a campaign completion label and release vehicle.

DESCRIPTION: Inspect, replace valve body and new valve body gasket.

IMPORTANT: Valve bodies replaced must be held by the dealer for physical scrapping by a Chevrolet representative.

*Campaign Administrative Allowance.

Dealers will automatically receive the correct labor and material allowance based on the labor operation performed. The (12.65) identified in the "parts allowance" column of V2291 represents 5 quarts of transmission fluid and gasket. Labor operation V2292, "parts allowance" represents 5 quarts of fluid, valve body and valve body gasket. Refer to the Chevrolet Claims Processing Manual for details on Product Campaign Claim submission.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Letter will require a "Campaign Identification Label". Each label provides a space to include the five digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen.

Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for periodic servicing by the owner.

Apply "Campaign Identification Label" only on a clean dry surface.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES

REFER TO THE CURRENT CHEVROLET SERVICE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANUAL AND CLAIMS PROCESSING MANUAL FOR CAMPAIGN HANDLING AND ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES.

General Motors has determined that some 1984 C/K 10-20, G20 and S/T 10 Model Chevrolet Trucks equipped with a 700 R4 automatic transmission (RPO MXO) may have been assembled without a throttle valve bushing in the transmission valve body. A missing bushing can cause erratic shifting. If the transmission continues to be operated in this condition, it could result in premature transmission failure.

To correct this condition on your vehicle, your Chevrolet Dealer will inspect the transmission and if necessary, replace the valve body. This service will completed for you at no charge.

Instructions for this service have been sent to your Chevrolet Dealer. The labor time to inspect your vehicle is approximately 15 minutes. If the valve body must be replaced, it will take about 1-1/2 hours. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be needed to process your vehicle.

The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please complete the postage paid reply card and return it to us.
