Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 23523-F Crankshaft Balancer Remover and Installer
    • J 22102 Front Cover Oil Seal Installer
  1. Install the crankshaft key, if necessary.

  2. Object Number: 67878 Size: SH
  3. Install the engine front cover seal. Use the J 22102 . Coat the new seal lips with engine oil.
  4. Notice: The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft balancer.

  5. Install the stud to the crankshaft. Thread the stud fully into the tapered hole in the crankshaft.
  6. Important: Use a small amount of RTV sealer in order to seal the crankshaft key to the crankshaft.

  7. Install the crankshaft balancer (external) over the end of the crankshaft.
  8. Install the bearings, washer, and the nut to the crankshaft using the following procedures:
  9. • Turn the nut to pull the crankshaft balancer (external) into place.
    • Remove the J 23523-F .
  10. Install the crankshaft balancer (external) bolt and washer.
  11. Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 115 N·m (85 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  12. Install the accessory drive pulley.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Engine Cooling.
  15. Install the drive belt.
  16. Install the upper radiator shroud.
