Fuel Pressure Regulator Replacement Central SFI
Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect the negative
battery cable.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure
.
- Remove the upper manifold assembly. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
Disassemble Procedure
Important: If the fuel pressure regulator is to be reinstalled, inspect the filter
screen (if equipped) for contamination. If the filter screen is contaminated,
remove and discard.
- Disassemble the fuel pressure regulator snap ring retainer.
- Disassemble the regulator assembly and the O-rings.
- Discard the O-rings.
Inspection Procedure
If the fuel pressure regulator is to be reinstalled, inspect the filter
screen (if equipped) for contamination. If contaminated, remove. Discard the
filter screen.
Assemble Procedure
- Lubricate the new O-rings with clean engine oil.
- Install the backup O-ring, the large O-ring, the filter and the
small O-ring.
- Assemble the regulator with the vacuum tube pointing down into the snap ring
retainer.
Installation Procedure
- Install the upper manifold assembly. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
- Connect the negative battery cable.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure
.
- Remove the ignition coil.
- Remove the intake manifold plenum. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
- Disconnect the vacuum line to the regulator.
- Remove the snap ring (1) from the pressure regulator housing.
- Place a towel under regulator to catch any fuel, then remove pressure
regulator from fuel socket. Twist back and forth while pulling from the socket.
- Remove the fuel pressure regulator (2) from the fuel rail socket.
- Remove the pressure regulator small O-ring (6), filter (5), large
O-ring (4), O-ring backup (3), and discard.
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the new pressure regulator O-rings (3), (4), (5), (6) with clean
engine oil and install on the regulator inlet as a complete assembly.
- Install the snap ring retainer (1) into the slot on the fuel regulator
housing.
- Connect the vacuum line to the regulator.
Important:
• | Verify that retainer is engaged in slot in pressure regulator
housing. Grasp and pull on regulator (2) to ensure that it is properly seated. |
• | Turn ignition to ON for two seconds and then turn OFF for 10 seconds.
Once again turn the ignition to ON and check for fuel leaks. |
