Shift Cable Adjustment
- Ensure the transmission shift lever is in the mechanical park
position.
• | The transmission control lever can be positioned to mechanical
park by rotating the control lever clockwise until it reaches it's final stop
position. |
• | Apply the parking brake. |
• | Raise and support the vehicle. |
- Slide the black retaining clip forward
on the shift cable end far enough to allow the white lock button to be pushed
out.
- Push the white lock button on the shift
cable end "Out" far enough to free the metal core adjust body
inside the cable end.
Do not push the white lock button completely out.
- Inspect the metal core adjust body on the shift cable end for
dirt or debris that may restrict its travel. If dirt or debris is found, remove
it by washing the shift cable end, metal core adjust body, and white lock
button with soap and water. If after cleaning, the travel of the metal core
adjust body remains restricted, the shift cable assembly must be replaced.
Refer to "Shift Cable Replacement" in this section.
• | Ensure that the parking brake is applied. |
- Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
- Move the transmission shift lever from "P" (Park)
to "1" (One) and back to "P" ten times.
- Place the shift lever to the "P" position.
- Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.
Raise and support the vehicle.
- Ensure that the transmission control lever is in mechanical park
by rotating the control lever clockwise until it reaches its full clockwise
stop position.
- Push the white lock button "In"
to secure the core adjuster body inside the shift cable end.
- Slide the black retainer clip rearward
over the shift cable end until it covers the white lock button and locks in
place over the shift cable end.
• | Ensure that the parking brake is applied. |
- Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
- Ensure that all of the shift light positions (P, R, N, D, 2, 1)
on the shift column can be engaged (that the light comes on under the shift
column letter when the shifter is positioned to that letter).
- Position the shifter to the park position. Ensure that the "P"
on the shift column is illuminated.
- Ensure that the engine starts in the "P" and "N"
positions only. Adjust the park/neutral position switch if necessary. Refer
to "Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment" in this section.
- Position the ignition switch to "Lock".
- Ensure that the key can only be removed in the "P"
position.
• | If either Step 2 or 3 can not be performed, repeat the shift cable
adjustment procedure. |
• | If both Steps 2 and 3 can be performed, start the engine and check
the vehicle transmission shifting. If the steering column shift light positions
are the same as the transmission engagements, the shift cable is properly
adjusted. |
Caution: With the selector lever in the PARK position, the parking pawl should
freely engage within the rear reaction internal gear lugs or output ring hear
lugs and prevent the vehicle from rolling, which could cause personal injury.
- Release the parking brake. Start the engine and check for proper transmission
shift operation.
