EASY ENTRY BENCH/BUCKET SEATS INOPERABLE

Subject: EASY ENTRY BENCH/BUCKET SEATS INOPERABLE

Model and Year: 1988-90 C/K TRUCKS

TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

Some C/K vehicles may experience a condition where the easy entry seat becomes inoperable and prevents the seat from sliding fore and aft (see Figure 1). As a result, unnecessary force may be used on the seat adjusting lever in an attempt to free the seat. This force may cause deformation of the seat adjusting lever which is attached to the seat riser (see Figure 2).

PROPER SEAT OPERATION

The easy entry seat is designed to allow the customer convenient access to the rear of the vehicle by tilting the seat back forward. This permits the customer to slide the seat for and aft without using the seat adjusting lever. When the customer attempts to return the seat by pushing it rearward and simultaneously using the seat adjusting lever, the inoperable condition may occur.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

For vehicles built prior to the VIN breakpoints listed in this bulletin, this condition can be repaired by removing the memory tab from the seat riser assembly as outlined in the service procedure listed below.

1) Remove seat retaining bolts. 2) Remove seat from vehicle. 3) Remove Easy Entry riser assembly (see Figure 2). 4) Remove memory tab from riser assembly by cutting at bend if equipped (see Figure 3). 5) Install repaired riser assembly or new riser assembly (Riser assembly should only be replaced if damage to the adjusting lever has occurred.) 6) Test seat for proper operation. 7) Inform customer on proper seat operation.

Important: The cutting area on the memory tab must be smooth to the touch.

For the vehicles built after the VIN breakpoints listed in this bulletin, or vehicles that have been repaired as outlined above, the easy entry feature may still become inoperable. Should this occur the customer should be informed to follow steps 1 and 2 to release the seat.

Step 1 Pull the seat adjusting lever toward the door with the seat back tilted forward, and push the seat forward.

Step 2 Release the seat adjusting lever, return the seat back to the upright position and push the seat rearward until it locks into position.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
