Removal Procedure
- Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
.
- Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine
Cooling.
- Remove the oil pan. Refer to
Oil Pan Replacement
.
Drop the front of the oil pan down to remove the engine front cover.
- Remove the engine front cover bolts.
- Remove the engine front cover and the gasket.
- Remove the engine front cover seal from the engine front cover.
• | Pry the engine front cover seal out with a screwdriver. |
• | Take care not to distort the engine front cover. |
- Clean the old gasket and the engine front cover.
- Inspect the engine front cover for distortion and damage. Replace
if necessary.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 22102 Oil Seal
Installer
- Coat the crankshaft front seal lips with clean engine oil.
- Use the J 22102
in order
to install the crankshaft front seal. The open end of the crankshaft front
seal faces inside the engine.
- Install the engine front cover gasket to the engine front cover.
- Install the engine front cover.
- Install the engine front cover bolts to the engine.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 11 N·m (100 lb in).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the oil pan. Refer to

- Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine
Cooling.
- Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
