Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36857 Engine Lift Bracket

  1. Remove the hood. Refer to Sheet Metal.
  2. Remove the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Remove the air cleaner box and the intake duct.
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Feeling Cooling System in Engine Cooling.
  5. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  6. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  7. Remove the radiator and the A/C condenser as an assembly. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  8. Remove the engine wiring harness and the connectors.
  9. Remove the accelerator and the cruise control linkages (if equipped).
  10. Remove the fuel supply lines at the rear of the intake.
  11. Remove the vacuum hoses.
  12. Remove the air conditioning compressor and the bracket. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  13. Raise the vehicle and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  14. Remove the front drive shaft (if equipped). Refer to Propeller Shaft.
  15. Remove the exhaust pipes at the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Engine Exhaust.
  16. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  17. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
  18. With an automatic transmission engine, remove the bolts from the flywheel to the torque converter. Refer to Automatic Transmission.
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20. Support the transmission.

  21. Object Number: 66458  Size: SH
  22. Attach J 36857 to the front of the left cylinder head.

  23. Object Number: 66457  Size: SH
  24. Attach J 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head.
  25. Notice: Damage may result from the use of an improper bolt when attaching J36857 into the cylinder head.

  26. Install the attaching bolt and the washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  28. Remove the bellhousing to engine bolts.
  29. Remove the front engine mount through bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement (Front) .
  30. Remove the engine.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine in the vehicle.
  2. Install the engine mount through bolts and the nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement (Front) .
  3. Install the bell housing bolts.
  4. Remove the lifting fixture, the J 36857 and the transmission jack.
  5. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  6. With an automatic transmission engine, install the bolts from the flywheel to the torque converter. Refer to Automatic Transmission.
  7. Install the flywheel or the torque converter cover.
  8. Install the starter motor.
  9. Install the exhaust pipes at the exhaust manifolds.
  10. Install the front axle.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Install the air conditioning compressor.
  13. Install the vacuum hoses.
  14. Install the fuel supply line.
  15. Install the accelerator and the cruise control linkages.
  16. Connect the engine wiring harness and the connectors.
  17. Install the radiator and A/C condenser as an assembly.
  18. Install the air cleaner box and the intake duct.
  19. Install the hood.
  20. Install the negative battery cable.
  21. Install the proper quantity and grade of coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling.
  22. Charge the A/C system. Refer to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  23. Install the proper quantity and grade of engine oil. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication.
