Info - Changes to Essential and Available Tool Numbering System

Subject: Changes to Essential and Available Tool Numbering System

Models:2003 and Prior Passenger Cars and Trucks
2003 HUMMER H2

GM Service Operations continues to work with GM global business units to commonize essential tools whenever possible. One area GM identified that assists in sharing information and tools is the numbering of essential and available tools.

Starting with the release of this bulletin, all NEW essential tools will be numbered under the global tool numbering system. This system is not a radical departure from the "J" numbering that you have seen for many years. In fact, many new tool numbers will appear familiar to you. GM will not re-number existing "J" tools with global tool numbers.

All new tools will be categorized into one of six tool groups by function. The first two digits of the tool number describe the tool category and will assist dealers in organizing their inventory of new tools.

Function Code

Category

GE

General (general tools, maintenance tools, HVAC)

EN

Engine (all engine-related tools)

DT

Transmission (all AT, MT and differential tools)

CH

Chassis (wheels, tires, brakes, steering, suspension, axle, subframe tools)

EL

All electrical and SIR tools

BO

All body, body-frame and trim tools

The two digit function code will be followed by a five-digit number sequence and appropriate suffixes as noted below.

Example: EN = Engine (see groups above) +

EN-12345

12345 = Main tool number

EN-12345-A

Superseded tool (-A)

EN-12345-1

Part out of a tool kit

EN-12345-100

Part out of a tool kit

EN-12345-100A

Superseded part out of a tool kit

Service Information (SI) will now call out both the previous "J" number tools and the new globally numbered tools when appropriate. The changes in the tool numbering system will not change the distribution or ordering process for tools supplied by Kent Moore-SPX.

If you have any questions about the changes to the tool numbering system or concerns about an essential tool, please contact Kent Moore-SPX at 1-800-GMTOOLS.
