Info - Front Caliper Brake Hose Clearance

For above listed vehicles the following should be observed to keep the front caliper brake hose from coming in contact with the inner wheel after servicing the front brakes:

1. Prior to servicing the brakes, where caliper removal is required, carefully mark the brake hose relative to the knuckle attachment bracket with a white marking pen. This will become the visual aid to assure adequate clearance between the wheel and brake hose during re-assembly.
2. When calipers are removed, do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose. Calipers must be supported by mechanic wire or equivalent (refer to Brake Pads Replacement - Front, item 6 in the Brakes Section of the 1999 C/K Silverado and Sierra Truck Service Manual) to assure that the brake hose is not stretched and allowed to move relative to the knuckle attachment bracket.



3. When service is complete and before the wheel is installled, perform visual inspection to insure that the white mark is properly lined up with the knuckle attachment bracket. After the wheel is installed, inspect the clearance between the brake hose and wheel. There must be at least 5 mm (.1875 in) clearance between the brake hose and wheel.

If the brake hose is not within the clearance specification, push the hose through the knuckle attachment bracket in the opposite direction. This will draw the brake hose further away from the wheel.
