Lube Regulator and Converter Relief Valve Springs Replacement

Tools Required

    • J 44723 Repair Stand/Transmission Adapter Plate
    • J 46409 Torque Converter Lifting T-handles
    • J 24459-5 Spring Compressor Adapter
    • J 43773 Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 43772 Torque Converter Seal Installer

  1. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to Transmission Replacement Transmission Replacement
  2. Holding Fixture Installation
  3. Input Speed Sensor Removal
  4. Torque Converter Assembly Removal
  5. Torque Converter Housing with Fluid Pump Assembly Removal
  6. Torque Converter Housing from Pump Assembly Disassemble
  7. Main Pump Disassemble

  8. Align the slot of J 24459-5 (2) with lube regulator retainer pin (1).
  9. Using J 24459-5 (2), compress the lube regulator valve spring until retainer pin (1) is loose. Remove the pin.

    10. Object Number: 1208097 Size: SH
  10. Remove stop (4), spring (2) and lube regulator valve (1).

    11. Object Number: 1208090 Size: SH
  11. Using J 43773 (2), compress the converter relief valve spring until retaining clip (1) is loose. Remove the clip.

  12. Remove spring (2) and converter relief valve (1).

    Important: The converter relief valve spring has been redesigned. Replace old valve springs with the current design P/N 29541296. The new design is 44.85 mm (1.766 inch) in free length, has 12.18 coils, and is not color coded.

  13. Install converter relief valve (1).
  14. Install new converter relief valve spring (2), P/N 29541296.

  15. Using J 43773 (2), compress the spring.
  16. Install retaining clip (1). Make sure the retaining clip is below the front support surface.

    17. Object Number: 1208097 Size: SH

    Important: The lube regulator valve spring has been redesigned. Replace an old valve spring with the current valve spring, P/N 29540523. The current valve spring is 31.43 mm (1.237 inch) in free length, has 6.79 coils, and is color coded with a light blue stripe.

  17. Install lube regulator valve (1).
  18. Install new lube regulator valve spring (2), P/N 29540523.
  19. Install the lube regulator stop.

    20. Object Number: 1216828 Size: SH
  20. AlignJ 24459-5 slot (2) with retainer hole (1).
  21. UsingJ 24459-5 (2), compress the spring until the stop is past the pin hole.
  22. Install the retainer pin (1). Make sure the pin is below the surface of the front support.

  26. Input Speed Sensor Installation
  27. Holding Fixture Removal

  28. Install the transmission into the vehicle. Refer to Transmission Replacement Transmission Replacement
