The device is a special tough fabric cover with a twisted shape that covers the full length of the front-wheel drive half-shaft on each side of the vehicle. It is a passive device that operates by itself. It will wear during its useful life because it rubs against built-up debris.
Off-highway usage can result in a buildup of debris (mud, snow, etc.) on the front suspension lower control arm. The purpose of this protective device is to protect the shaft seals from damage caused by this debris. it sweeps the debris from the lower control arm that might damage the shaft seals.
After time this device will take on a ragged appearance while still being able to protect the shaft seals. The device is working as long as the fabric can sweep debris from the lower control arm. Replace the fabric cover when debris continues to build up and is not swept away.
