Removal Procedure
Notice: When lifting the vehicle do not allow the jack to touch the rear steering
gear. If the jack touches the rear steering gear you may damage the gear or
the rack and pinion boots. If the boots are damaged replace the rack and
pinion boot.
- Remove the upper ball joint. Refer to
Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement
.
- Remove the lower ball joint. Refer to
Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement
.
- Remove the wheel hub and bearing. Refer to
Wheel Hub and Bearing Replacement
.
- Remove the outer tie rod retaining nut (1).
- Disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering
knuckle using the J 24319-B
(1).
- Remove the park brake cable retaining bolt (3) from the steering knuckle.
- Remove the steering knuckle (2) from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the steering knuckle (2) to the vehicle.
- Install the upper ball joint. Refer to
Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement
.
- Install the lower ball joint. Refer to
Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement
.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the park brake cable retaining bolt (3) to the steering knuckle.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).
- Install the wheel hub and bearing. Refer to
Wheel Hub and Bearing Replacement
.
- Install the outer tie rod retaining nut
(1).
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 55 N·m (40 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Perform a four wheel alignment. Refer to
Wheel Alignment Measurement
in Wheel Alignment.
