Subject:Increased Steering and Brake Effort on Hybrid Truck (PHT) (RPO HP2), DTC C0895 Set (Replace Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS) Fuse)

Models:2004-2005 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid (HP2) Pickup Trucks
2004-2005 GMC Sierra Hybrid (HP2) Pickup Trucks

Condition

Some customers may comment on an increased steering and braking effort. This condition DOES NOT eliminate the ability to steer or slow the vehicle. When the power steering pump no longer provides power assist, steering control reverts to manual steering. Suspect vehicles would continue to comply with the stopping requirements specified in MVSS for vehicles with no power assist.

Cause

The cause of this condition may be due to the in-line 125 amp fuse in the 42V electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) pump circuit becoming corroded, resulting in an open circuit.

Correction

Replace the in-line 125 amp fuse using service kit, P/N 15833801. Follow the procedure listed below.

  1. Perform the Energy Storage Box (ESB) Service Disconnect procedure in the service information (SI Document ID # 1265987).
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Remove the right front wheelhouse panel.
  5. Disconnect the fuse lead connector from the power steering harness connector.
  6. Remove the existing in-line fuse by cutting the cable just rear of the fuse. Cut enough cable back to ensure that the cable is uncontaminated.
  7. Strip approximately 12 mm (1 in) of insulation from the cable and crimp the provided terminal to the stripped cable end using crimp tool EL-48045.
  8. Install the provided connector body to the terminal and push through the weather pack seal until fully seated.
  9. Connect the service harness to the power steering harness connector.
  10. Secure the harness using tie-straps.
  11. Install the right front wheelhouse panel.
  12. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Perform the Energy Storage Box (ESB) Service Connect procedure in the service information (SI Document ID # 1265987).
