EXTERNAL LEAKS: IF THE POWER CYLINDER IS LEAKING EXTERNALLY, WIPE IT CLEAN TO DETERMINE WHERE IT IS LEAKING. LEAKAGE ROUND THE PISTON ROD SEALS MAY BE CORRECTED BY REPLACING THE SEALS. IF THE POWER CYLINDER STILL LEAKS AFTER REPLACING THE SEALS, THE CYLINDER CHECK VALVE IS NOT OPERATING PROPERLY AND THE COMPLETE POWER CYLINDER WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED. ANY LEAKAGE AROUND THE WELDS ON THE CYLINDER WILL NECESSITATE REPLACING THE COMPLETE POWER CYLINDER ASSEMBLY. TIGHTEN THE HOSE CONNECTION AT THE EXTENSION AND RETRACTION PORTS IF THIS IS A SOURCE OF LEAKAGE. IF TIGHTENING THE CONNECTION DOES NOT STOP LEAKAGE, INSPECT HOSES AND CONNECTORS AND REPLACE IF NECESSARY. IF LEAKAGE STILL PERSISTS, REPLACE THE COMPLETE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY. INTERNAL LEAKS: INTERNAL LEAKAGE IN THE POWER CYLINDER WILL SHOW UP AS A MOMENTARY INCREASE IN DRIVER EFFORT. IF THIS OCCURS AND NO OTHER SOURCE FOR THE CONDITION CAN BE DETERMINED BY FOLLOWING THE STEERING SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE IN THE TRUCK SERVICE MANUAL X-8034, SECTION 3B, REPLACE THE COMPLETE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY. IN CONCLUSION, THE CYLINDER IS NOT SERVICED EXCEPT FOR THE PISTON ROD SEALS. ANY DAMAGE TO THE CYLINDER WHICH WILL HAMPER ITS OPERATION NECESSITATES REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPLETE POWER CYLINDER ASSEMBLY.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
