Subject: | White Smoke at Cold Idle, Inadequate Cab Heat/Defrost Temperature in Cold Weather Conditions (Install New Fan Blade and Fan Clutch Kit) |
Models: | 1990-99 Chevrolet and GMC 6-7H Medium Duty Conventional, 7T School Bus Models |
with 3116 and 3126 Caterpillar® Diesel Engines |
Some owners/operators may comment about cold weather operation of the above vehicles in low ambient temperatures. The conditions may include possible white smoke at cold idle or inadequate cab heat/defrost temperature.
These conditions may be caused by extended idling or stationary light engine load operation which does not allow the engine to maintain the proper thermostatic coolant temperature in cold weather. However, this condition is considered normal.
New Horton Electromagnetic electric fan clutch kits and fan blades have been developed for those customers who desire to modify the vehicle to address this condition. These fan clutches feature a slower disengaged speed that will assist in maintaining the engine temperature in cold weather operation.
Important: The reinforced fan blades and the Horton fan clutches must be used as a set.
These fan clutch kits must be used with the fan blade part numbers listed below. These fan blades have reinforced center hubs that were approved for use with the Horton clutches. Steel fan blades are standard with all the 3126 Cat® production engines equipped with viscous fan clutches.
Refer to the Engine Cooling subsection of the appropriate year Medium Duty Service Manual for fan clutch replacement procedures.
