ON SOME MEDIUM DUTY MODELS LISTED ABOVE, THE POWER STEERING (PS) PUMPS ARE BEING REPLACED FOR LEAKS EVEN THOUGH THE FAULT MAY NOT BE IN THE PUMP. WARRANTY INFORMATION INDICATES "NO TROUBLE FOUND" ON MANY RETURNED PS PUMPS THAT WERE REPORTED AS LEAKING.
HOWEVER, WHEN THE PUMP IS REPLACED, THE CONNECTIONS AND THE LINES ARE CHECKED AND RECONNECTED WHICH USUALLY ELIMINATES THE LEAK CONDITION. REPLACING THE PUMP NEEDLESSLY DRIVES WARRANTY COSTS UP.
BEFORE DETERMINING THAT THE PS PUMP NEEDS REP|ACEMENT, DO THE FOLLOWING VISUAL INSPECTION IN ORDER TO FIND THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK:
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. WIPE OFF ALL OF THE PS LINES AND CONNECTIONS, ESPECIALLY THE LINE BETWEEN THE RESERVOIR AND THE PUMP.
2. START THE ENGINE.
3. INSPECT THE PS LINES AND CONNECTIONS IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE ACTUAL LEAK PRIOR TO AUTOMATICALLY REPLACING THE PUMP. DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE PUMP IS LEAKING.
