REVISION: 09/18/97

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REVISED TO INCLUDE DETAILED INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FILTER KIT, AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID FLOW RATE CHECK AND A NEW LABOR OPERATION NUMBER. PLEASE DISCARD CORPORATE BULLETIN #76-71-02 (SECTION 7-TRANSMISSION). ______________________________________________________________________

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON JATCO ELECTROMATIC(R) TRANSMISSION FILTER KIT INSTALLATION/FILTER CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT

MODELS: 1988-97 CHEVROLET TILTMASTER AND GMC FORWARD W4 MODELS WITH JATCO ELECTROMATIC(R) TRANSMISSION

IMPORTANT

THIS TRANSMISSION FILTER KIT DOES NOT CURRENTLY APPLY TO BUDGET ONE- WAY OR BUDGET CORP CITIES MODELS. THESE MODELS HAVE A WATER SEPARATOR THAT IS MOUNTED IN THE SAME AREA WHERE THE TRANSMISSION FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY FROM THE KIT NEEDS TO BE MOUNTED.

WHEN INSTALLING A REMANUFACTURED OR NEW JATCO ELECTROMATIC(R) TRANSMISSION, THE FOLLOWING MUST BE PERFORMED.

ENSURE THAT THE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER AND LINES ARE FLUSHED AS DESCRIBED IN SERVICE BULLETIN 77-71-59 ISSUED JUNE 1997. INSTALL AN APPROPRIATE JATCO ELECTROMATIC(R) TRANSMISSION FILTER KIT (SEE PARTS INFORMATION SECTION). IF THE VEHICLE ALREADY HAS THE TRANSMISSION FILTER KIT INSTALLED, REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION FILTER CARTRIDGE WITH A NEW ONE.

IMPORTANT

USE ONLY THE JATCO ELECTROMATIC(R) TRANSMISSION FILTER CARTRIDGE, P/N 97720052, FOR THIS PURPOSE. USAGE OF ANY OTHER OIL FILTER CAN CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION.

THIS SERVICE BULLETIN PROVIDES DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING THE JATCO ELECTROMATIC TRANSMISSION FILTER KIT OR REPLACING THE JATCO ELECTROMATIC TRANSMISSION FILTER CARTRIDGE. FOLLOWING THESE PROCEDURES WILL ENSURE TRANSMISSION FLUID CLEANLINESS.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

********************************************************************** INSTALLING THE TRANSMISSION FILTER KIT (PART NO. 97720032) (1988-95.5 W4 MODELS) **********************************************************************

FILTER KIT INSTALLATION ON THESE VEHICLES REQUIRES THE DRILLING OF TWO 3/8" DIAMETER HOLES IN THE PASSENGER SIDE VEHICLE FRAME FOR MOUNTING THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY. BE SURE TO DRILL THESE MOUNTING HOLES USING THE FOLLOWING STEPS BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE INSTALLATION.

1. LOCATE THE FORWARD FUEL TANK SPACER BRACKET MOUNTED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE FRAME.

2. POSITION THE TEMPLATE SUPPLIED IN THE FILTER KIT ONTO THE FUEL TANK SPACER BRACKET (SEE FIGURE 1) AND USE IT TO CENTER PUNCH AND DRILL TWO 1/8" STARTER HOLES, THEN FINISH OFF WITH 3/8" HOLES. PAINT ANY METAL LEFT BARE FROM DRILLING TO PREVENT RUST.

3. THREAD THE TUBE ASSEMBLY ONTO THE IN PORT FITTING OF THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY AND THE HOSE ASSEMBLY ONTO THE OUT PORT FITTING. HAND TIGHTEN THE FITTINGS (SEE FIGURE 2).

4. MOUNT THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY TO THE FUEL TANK SPACER BRACKET USING THE TWO BOLTS, NUTS, AND WASHERS SUPPLIED IN THE KIT. TIGHTEN THE TWO BOLTS TO 15 NM (11 LB FT) EACH.

IMPORTANT: WHEN THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY IS PROPERLY INSTALLED, THE FILTER CARTRIDGE THREADS ON THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY WILL POINT DOWNWARD.

5. PLACE A DRIP PAN UNDER THE TRANSMISSION WHERE THE RUBBER HOSE CONNECTS TO THE OVERBRIDGE PIPE. DISCONNECT THE RUBBER HOSE FROM THE OVERBRIDGE PIPE AND RECONNECT IT TO THE TUBE ASSEMBLY ON THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY. HAND TIGHTEN THE CONNECTION.

6. POSITION THE TUBE ASSEMBLY SO THAT THERE IS CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE TUBE ASSEMBLY AND THE LOWER FRAME RAIL. TIGHTEN THE TUBE ASSEMBLY NUT AT THE IN PORT FITTING OF THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY TO 34 NM (25 LB FT). TIGHTEN THE RUBBER HOSE-TO-TUBE ASSEMBLY CONNECTION TO 45 NM (33 LB FT).

7. INSTALL THE HOSE ASSEMBLY FROM THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY ONTO THE OVERBRIDGE PIPE END. TIGHTEN THE CONNECTION TO 45 NM (33 LB FT).

8. ADJUST THE 45 DEGREE ELBOW ATTACHED TO THE OUT PORT OF THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY SO THAT THE HOSE ASSEMBLY HAS NO KINKS, TIGHT CURVES OR ANY TUBE ASSEMBLY CONTACT. ONCE ADJUSTED, TIGHTEN THE SWIVEL NUT ON THE OUT PORT OF THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY TO 20 NM (15 LB FT).

9. APPLY A FILM OF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (ATF), DEXRON(R)-III, P/N 12346143, TO THE SEALING GASKET OF THE FILTER CARTRIDGE AND SPIN THE CARTRIDGE ONTO THE MOUNTING THREADS OF THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY UNTIL IT JUST CONTACTS THE BRACKET BASE, THEN HAND TIGHTEN THE FILTER CARTRIDGE 1/2 TO 3/4 TURN.

10. FILL THE TRANSMISSION WITH 3/4 QUART OF DEXRON(R)-III ATF AT THE DIPSTICK TUBE IN ADDITION TO THE NORMAL DEXRON(R)-III ATF NEEDED FOR TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY CHANGE.

11. START THE ENGINE. WITH THE PARKING BRAKE APPLIED, MOVE THE TRANSMISSION SELECTOR THROUGH ALL THE POSITIONS THEN RETURN THE SELECTOR TO PARK. SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. INSPECT ALL HOSES AND CONNECTIONS INVOLVED IN THE KIT INSTALLATION FOR LEAKS.

PERFORM AN ATF FLOW RATE CHECK USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:

1. REMOVE THE EYE BOLT AND TWO WASHERS FROM THE BANJO END LOCATED WHERE THE OVERBRIDGE PIPE ATTACHES TO THE LEFT REAR OF THE TRANSMISSION.

2. PLACE A SUITABLE MEASURING CONTAINER UNDER THE BANJO END, START THE ENGINE AND RUN IT FOR 10 SECONDS.

IMPORTANT: THE MINIMUM ACCUMULATION OF DEXRON(R)-III ATF IN THE MEASURING CONTAINER MUST BE 0.9 TO 1.5 QUARTS FOR THE 10-SECOND TIME PERIOD.

3. IF THE ATF FLOW RATE MEETS THE ABOVE SPECIFICATION, INSTALL THE BANJO END TO THE TRANSMISSION, START THE ENGINE, AND CHECK FOR LEAKS. TOP OFF THE ATF WITH DEXRON(R)-III AS REQUIRED. IF THE ATF FLOW RATE DOES NOT MEET THE ABOVE SPECIFICATION, TRACE DOWN THE SOURCE OF THE BLOCKAGE AND REPAIR AS REQUIRED.

4. WHEN COMPLETED, INSTALL THE BANJO END TO THE TRANSMISSION, START THE ENGINE AND CHECK FOR LEAKS. TOP OFF THE ATF, AS REQUIRED WITH DEXRON(R)-III.

********************************************************************** INSTALLING THE TRANSMISSION FILTER KIT (PART NO. 97720033) (1996-ON W4 MODELS) **********************************************************************

1. THREAD THE TUBE ASSEMBLY ONTO THE IN PORT FITTING OF THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY AND THE HOSE ASSEMBLY ONTO THE OUT PORT FITTING. HAND TIGHTEN THE FITTINGS (SEE FIGURE 3).

2. MOUNT THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY ONTO THE AIR CLEANER SUPPORT BRACKET USING THE TWO BOLTS, NUTS, AND WASHERS SUPPLIED IN THE KIT. TIGHTEN THE TWO BOLTS TO 15 NM (11 LB FT) EACH.

IMPORTANT: WHEN THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY IS PROPERLY INSTALLED, THE FILTER CARTRIDGE THREADS ON THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY WILL POINT UPWARD.

5. INSTALL THE HOSE ASSEMBLY FROM THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY ONTO THE OVERBRIDGE PIPE END. TIGHTEN THE CONNECTION TO 45 NM (33 LB FT).

6. ADJUST THE 45 DEGREE ELBOW ATTACHED TO THE OUT PORT OF THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY SO THAT THE HOSE ASSEMBLY HAS NO KINKS, TIGHT CURVES OR ANY TUBE ASSEMBLY CONTACT (SEE FIGURE 3). ONCE ADJUSTED, TIGHTEN THE SWIVEL NUT ON THE OUT PORT OF THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY TO 20 NM (15 LB FT).

7. APPLY A FILM OF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (ATF) TO THE SEALING GASKET OF THE FILTER CARTRIDGE AND SPIN THE CARTRIDGE ONTO THE MOUNTING THREADS OF THE FILTER HEAD ASSEMBLY UNTIL IT JUST CONTACTS THE BRACKET BASE, THEN HAND TIGHTEN THE CARTRIDGE 1/2 TO 3/4 TURN.

8. FILL THE TRANSMISSION WITH 3/4 QUART OF ATF DEXRON(R)-III AT THE DIPSTICK TUBE IN ADDITION TO THE NORMAL ATF DEXRON(R)-III NEEDED FOR TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY CHANGE.

9. START THE ENGINE. WITH THE PARKING BRAKE APPLIED, MOVE THE TRANSMISSION SELECTOR THROUGH ALL THE POSITIONS, THEN RETURN THE SELECTOR TO PARK.

IMPORTANT: THE MINIMUM ACCUMULATION OF ATF DEXRON(R)-III IN THE MEASURING CONTAINER MUST BE 0.9 TO 1.5 QUARTS FOR THE 10-SECOND TIME PERIOD.

3. IF THE ATF FLOW RATE MEETS THE ABOVE SPECIFICATIONS, INSTALL THE BANJO END TO THE TRANSMISSION, START THE ENGINE, AND CHECK FOR LEAKS.
