Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 28509-A Sprocket Remover

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement .
  3. Remove the radiator assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement .
  4. Remove the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement .
  5. Remove the Camshaft Position Sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement .
  6. Remove the upper intake manifold from the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  7. Remove the lower intake manifold from the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  8. Remove the valve rocker arm covers from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  9. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  10. Remove the valve lifters from the engine block. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  11. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  12. Remove the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement
  13. Remove the water pump from the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Replacement .
  14. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  15. Remove the crankshaft position reluctor ring from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring Replacement .
  16. Remove the timing chain and sprockets from the engine block. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .

  17. Object Number: 65848  Size: SH
  18. Use the J 28509-A to remove the camshaft sprocket.

  19. Object Number: 193223  Size: SH
  20. Remove the camshaft retainer bolt and retainer from the engine block.

  21. Object Number: 66262  Size: SH
  22. Install three 5/16-18 bolts 4 to 5 inches long into the camshaft threaded bolt holes. Use these bolts has a handle for the camshaft removal.

  23. Object Number: 66262  Size: SH
  24. Pull the camshaft from the engine block. Use care as not to damage the camshaft bearings.
  25. Remove the three 5/16-18 bolts from the camshaft.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 22102 Seal Installer

  1. Install the three 5/16-18 bolts 4 to 5 inches long into the camshaft threaded bolt holes. Use these bolts has a handle for the camshaft installation.
  2. Coat the camshaft lobes and journals with engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 before installing the camshaft into the cylinder block.

  4. Install the camshaft into the engine block. Use care to avoid damaging the camshaft journals or bearing surfaces.
  5. Remove the three 5/16-18 bolts from the camshaft.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the camshaft retainer and bolts in the engine block.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  9. Use the J 22102 to install the crankshaft sprocket.

  11. Install the timing chain and camshaft sprocket to the camshaft.
  12. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts to the camshaft. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  13. Install the crankshaft position reluctor ring on the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring Replacement .
  14. Install the engine front cover to the engine block. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  15. Install the water pump to the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Replacement .
  16. Install the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement .
  17. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  18. Install the drive belt to the vehicle. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  19. Install the valve lifters to the engine block. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  20. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  21. Install the lower intake manifold to the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  22. Install the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  23. Install the Camshaft Position Sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement .
  24. Install the valve rocker arm covers to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  25. Install the radiator in the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement .
  26. Install the air conditioning condenser to the vehicle. Refer to Condenser Replacement .
  27. Install the air cleaner duct to the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement .
