Removal Procedure

Important: Valve rocker arm cover gaskets are reusable. Replace the valve rocker arm cover gasket only if damaged.

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Rear Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.
  3. Important: Twist the spark plug wire boot one-half turn in order to release the boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

  4. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils.
  5. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors from the ignition coils and position the harness away.
  6. Remove the vent tube from the valve rocker arm cover and the throttle body.

  7. Object Number: 173189 Size: SH
  8. Remove the engine vent tube from the throttle body.

  9. Object Number: 258831 Size: SH
  10. Remove the throttle body from the intake manifold if necessary. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement (SFI) in Engine Controls.
  11. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  12. Remove the valve rocker arm cover, with the ignition coils installed, from the cylinder head.
  13. Remove the valve rocker arm cover gasket from the cylinder head.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the valve rocker cover gasket to the cylinder head.
  2. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  5. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  6. Install the throttle body to the upper intake manifold. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement (SFI) in Engine Controls.

  7. Object Number: 173189 Size: SH
  8. Install the engine vent tube to the throttle body and the valve rocker arm cover.
  9. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.

  10. Object Number: 258831 Size: SH
  11. Connect the ignition coil harness connectors.
  12. Install the air intake duct to the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Rear Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.
