Removal Procedure
- Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands.
- Exercise caution when working around the oxygen sensor. Do not cut the pigtail wire.
- Disconnect the Oxygen Sensor connector.
- Remove the mounting flange to exhaust pipe retaining nuts forward of the converter.
- Remove the clamp retaining nuts and clamp rear of the converter.
- Support the exhaust pipe, in front of the converter, before removing the converter.
- Seperate the converter pipe from the muffler pipe.
- Remove the converter mounting flange from the exhaust pipe flange.
Installation Procedure
- Apply sealer GM P/N 9984226, or equivalent, at the slip-joint connections.
- Install a new gasket between the converter mouning flange and the exhaust pipe flange forward of the converter.
- Install the new catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe flange.
- Install the muffler pipe to the catalytic converter pipe.
- Install a new U-bolt clamp and retaining nuts to the rear converter pipe outlet.
- Install new nuts at the front of the converter.
- Connect the Oxygen Sensor connector.
- Check for proper clearance and alignment.
- Lower the vehicle.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Tighten
| • | Tighten the U-bolt nuts to 52 N·m (38 lb ft) |
| • | Tighten the Converter nuts to 48 N·m (35 lb ft) |
