Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 39256 Pitman Arm Puller
    • J 26813-B Steering Linkage Puller

    Notice: Do not hammer on the pitman arm, pitman arm shaft, or puller. Damage to the pitman or steering gear may result. Pitman arms are non-repairable and must be replaced when damaged or worn.

  1. Position the front wheels and the steering wheel straight ahead.

  2. Object Number: 228469  Size: SH
  3. Remove the cotter pin (3).
  4. Discard the cotter pin.
  5. Remove the relay rod nut (2).

  6. Object Number: 215973  Size: SH
  7. Use the J 26813-B in order to remove the relay rod end assembly from the pitman arm end.
  8. Mark the position of the pitman arm on the pitman shaft.

  9. Object Number: 228479  Size: SH
  10. Remove the pitman arm nut.

  11. Object Number: 228480  Size: SH
  12. Use the J 39256 in order to remove the pitman arm from the pitman arm shaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Align the position marks on the pitman arm and the pitman shaft.

  2. Object Number: 228479  Size: SH
  3. Install the pitman arm on the pitman shaft.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Important: Install the pitman arm nut with the flange facing outward.

  5. Install the pitman arm nut.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the pitman arm nut to 578 N·m (426 lb ft).

  7. Stake the pitman arm nut (2) to the pitman arm shaft.

  9. Install the relay rod (4). Refer to Relay Rod Replacement .
