Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 281596  Size: SH
  4. Remove the dust cap (2) from the slip yoke tube.
  5. Remove the shaft (1).
  6. Remove the cork or felt seal (3).
  7. Remove the steel ring (4).
  8. Remove the dust cap (2) from the shaft (1). The dust cap may have an integral rubber seal. If the rubber seal is present, there will be no steel ring or cork (or felt) seal.
  9. Remove the lubrication fitting.
  10. 8.1. Clean the slip yoke.
    8.2. Clean the slip yoke splines.
    8.3. Clean the shaft splines.
    8.4. Inspect the slip yoke splines for wear or twist.
    8.5. Check for backlash between the slip yoke and the shaft. If the backlash is excessive, replace the slip joint.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 281596  Size: SH
  1. Install the dust cap (2) on the shaft.
  2. Install the steel ring (4) on the shaft.
  3. Install the new cork (or felt ) seal (3) on the shaft.
  4. Apply lubricant on the shaft splines.
  5. Install the shaft (1) on the slip yoke.
  6. Install the dust cap (2) to the slip yoke. Hand Tighten.
  7. Install the lubrication fitting in the slip yoke.
  8. Lubricate the slip joint.
  9. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement .
