The BRAKE lamp in the instrument cluster signals a malfunction
in the brake system, an overtravel condition in the auto apply park brake
system, a manual apply condition for the park brake, or an antilock brake
system problem.
There are five conditions that can cause the BRAKE lamp to come on:
• | The lamp can be illuminated by a malfunction in the hydraulic
foundation brake. The hydraulic brake system has a switch located in the combination
valve. That switch closes when unequal pressure exists between the front and
rear brakes. |
• | There is a switch in the auto apply park brake actuator housing.
That switch opens if the actuator travels farther than desired. That will
turn on the BRAKE lamp when the park brake is applied, indicating the need
for an adjustment of the park brake cable. |
• | If the pull button switch is pulled to apply the park brake manually,
the BRAKE lamp is turned on. |
• | The ABS system can turn on the BRAKE lamp. |
• | There is a bulb check at start up. When the ignition switch is
in the START position, the BRAKE lamp should come on. |
