J 26813-B Steering Linkage Puller

1. Position the front wheels and the steering wheel straight ahead.



2. Remove the cotter pins at each end of the relay rod (4).
3. Discard the cotter pins (3).
4. Remove the relay rod nuts (2).



5. Use the J 26813-B in order to remove the relay rod from the pitman arm.



6. Use the J 26813-B in order to remove the relay rod from the steering arm.
7. Inspect the relay rod for damage.
8. Inspect the end assembly stud threads for damage.
9. Inspect the end assembly rubber seals for the following conditions:

•

Damage

•	Deterioration

10. Install the relay rod nut.
11. Install the cotter pin.
12. Measure the torque required to turn the ball stud.
13. Replace the relay rod if the turning torque is less than 0.5 N·m (5.0 lb in).
14. Repeat steps 10 through 13 for the other ball stud.

1. Install the relay rod assembly (4) to the pitman arm (1).
2. Install the relay rod nut (2).



3. Install the relay rod end assembly to the steering arm.
4. Install the relay rod nut.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

5. Install the relay rod nut.

Tighten
Tighten the relay rod nut to 159 N·m (117 lb ft).

6. Install the new cotter pins.
7. Advance the nuts to the nearest cotter pin slot and to the cotter pins.
8. Lubricate the relay rod with the chassis lubricant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations in Maintenance and Lubrication.
