Removal Procedure

J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller


    Object Number: 30678  Size: SH
  1. Remove the horn pad assembly. Refer to Horn Switch Replacement.

  2. Object Number: 30681  Size: SH
  3. Remove the retainer.

  4. Object Number: 30682  Size: SH
  5. Remove the steering wheel nut. Observe the alignment marks showing the relationship of the steering wheel to the steering shaft.

  6. Object Number: 795  Size: SH
  7. Install J 1859-A on the steering wheel.
  8. Notice: Do not hammer on the following parts:

       • The pitman arm
       • The pitman shaft
       • The steering linkage puller
    This action could cause damage to the pitman arm or steering gear.

  9. Remove the steering wheel.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 30683  Size: SH
  1. Place the turn signal control assembly in the center (OFF) position when you assemble the steering wheel.
  2. Install the steering wheel onto the steering shaft.
  3. Important: Do not misalign the steering wheel more than 25.4 mm (1 in) from the horizontal centerline.

  4. Align the marks on the steering shaft and the steering wheel.

  5. Object Number: 30682  Size: SH
  6. Install the steering wheel nut.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel nut to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the retainer.

  10. Install the horn and the pad assembly. Refer to Horn Switch Replacement.
