PASSENGER CAR VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

The vehicle identification number is visible through the windshield near the left door. On all passenger cars, except Corvette, it is stamped on a plate located on the instrument panel. On Corvettes, it is on the left windshield pillar.

LIGHT DUTY (10-30) TRUCK VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

"C", "G", "S" and El Camino trucks display the VIN plate on the left hand side of the instrument panel area. On P 42 models, the plate is attached to the top of the radiator support, and on Motor Home Chassis P 32, to the dash and toe panel.

MEDIUM DUTY TRUCK VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

On Conventional Cabs, the VIN plate is mounted on the left door lock pillar. On School Bus Chassis, the plate is attached to the engine side of the cowl. On P models, it is located on top of the radiator support panel.

On the Chevrolet, Malibu Classic, El Camino and Monte Carlo, the body identification plate is located on the upper horizontal surface of the cowl plenum chamber. The Cavalier, Celebrity, Camaro, Citation and Chevette plate is located on the upper horizontal surface of the radiator support.

CORVETTE BODY PAINT AND TRIM PLATE

The body paint and trim plate which is stamped with the trim, paint and time built codes is attached to the left door hinge pillar.

The time built code contains an alpha representing the month followed by two (2) numerics representing the day of the month. A is used for the first month, B for the second, etc. EXAMPLE: A21 (August 21st); B02 (September 2).

LIGHT DUTY TRUCK SERVICE PARTS IDENTIFICATION STICKER

A Service Parts Identification Sticker is furnished for L.D. trucks except El Camino. It contains a complete listing of the vehicle identification number (VIN) wheel base and all production options used to assemble the vehicle, such as suspension, body equipment, engine, axle, transmission, tires, etc.

On "C", "K", "G" and "S" models, this sticker is attached to the inner glove compartment. For "P" models, it is mailed separately to the dealer. On "G" models, the sticker is located on the inner hood panel surface.

PASSENGER CAR ENGINE PRODUCTION CODE EXPLANATION

Chevrolet produced engines will be stamped with a source, production date and engine suffix. Other General Motors produced engines used in Chevrolet vehicles will use a label affixed to the engine assembly.

CHEVROLET ENGINE PRODUCTION CODE

ENGINE CODE LOCATIONS

L4 1.6L

The code is stamped on a pad on the right side of the engine below the number one cylinder parallel to the cylinder case deck.

L4 1.8L

The engine production code and partial VIN are stamped on a horizontal surface of the block just rearward of the water pump.

L4 2.5L

The code is on a sticker placed on the timing gear cover and is also stamped on the block, water pump end, just below the cylinder head. This is a two letter alpha code indicating engine type.

V6 2.8L

The code is stamped on a horizontal machined surface on the block just forward of the intake manifold.

V6 3.8L 231 CID (Front Mounted Distributor)

Located on the front face of the left rocker on a paper label

V6 3.8L 229 CID (Rear Mounted Distributor)

Located on cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right cylinder head.

V8 5. 7L 350 CID (Diesel)

The code is on a label located on rear face of left valve cover.

V8 5.0L and 5.7L

Located on cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right cylinder head.

NOTE: In addition, all passenger car engines (except 3.8L 231 CID) will have a portion of the vehicle identification number stamped near the engine production code, usually near the right hand side of the cylinder case. This condensed identification number consists of the division number, model year, assembly plant designation and vehicle build sequence number.

TRUCK ENGINE PRODUCTION CODE EXPLANATION

Chevrolet produced engines, except 6.2L diesel will be stamped with a source, production date and engine suffix. Other General Motors produced engines used in Chevrolet vehicles will use a label affixed to the engine assembly.

NOTE: In addition, all 10-30 Series Trucks have a portion of the vehicle identification number stamped near the engine production code, usually near the right hand side of the cylinder case. This identification number consists of the division code, model year, assembly plant designation and vehicle build sequence number.

The truck engine codes are located as follows:

The code is stamped on a horizontal machined surface on the block left side just rearward of the exhaust manifold.

L6

The code is stamped on a pad on the right side of cylinder case just rear of the distributor.

V8

305, 350 CID Engines - the code is stamped on the cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right hand cylinder head.

366, 427, 454 CID Engines - the code is stamped on a pad on the front top center of the cylinder case immediately forward of the inlet manifold.

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION

The manual and automatic transaxle each has its own code location and explanation.

MANUAL TRANSAXLE

Four-Speed 76MM

The code is stamped on a diagonal case surface directly beneath the clutch lever cable reaction bracket.

The Muncie 76mm stamp consists of two (2) alpha and three (3) numeric characters as shown below:

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE

THM 125C Three-Speed Automatic

The code is located on a stamped metal tag adjacent to the shifter shaft on the transaxle.

The THM 125C/440 T4 stamp consists of one (1) alpha and five (5) numeric characters as shown below. In addition, a sequence number is stamped below the date build code.

THM 440 T4 Four-Speed Automatic

The code is located on a stamped metal tag on the rear face of the transaxle case adjacent to right hand axle opening.

Canadian produced transaxles will start with source ID code, build date, model year code and engineering change level number.

Manual Transmissions

Four-speed transmissions built at Chevrolet plants will carry a production code number. The code number identifies the source, model year, month and day produced.

The transmission codes are located as follows:

Four-Speed

The muncie (cast iron case) transmission (Saginaw type) is stamped on the machined surface of the left side of the case just below the side cover.

The Muncie 70mm (aluminum case) transmission is stamped on the bottom center front of case.

Warner Gear Four and Five-Speed

The Warner Gear transmissions have the source code, model year, month, day and shift identification stamped at the upper left side of the metal tag attached to rear of the case on the upper right of the tag is their sequential serial number.

Four-Speed Manual With Automatic Overdrive (Doug Nash) MK2

Source part number and trade mark appear above speedo gear opening. No build code information.

Chevette Five-Speed Isuzu Transmission

Right side of transmission case at rear extension is a six digit ink stamp transmission serial number. On right side of bell housing at approximately 4:00 o'clock position, five digit ink stamp.

Automatic Transmissions

Turbo Hydra-Matic 180C Automatic Transmission

The THM 180C automatic transmission code and transmission serial number appear on a metal tag fastened to the left side of the transmission just rearward of the converter housing.

Turbo Hydra-Matic 200C Automatic Transmission

The production code number contains the model year, vehicle application and build date code. The transmission model num- ber and sequence number is stamped below the build date code on an identification plate, located on the right side the transmission case.

In addition to the vehicle application and Julian build date code, Hydra-Matic Division also includes the model year, model and sequence number.

BUILD DATE

The build date code starts with the Julian date (day of the year) on which 1983 production started. The build date code continues with the Julian date until December 31st (365).

Turbo Hydra-Matic 250C and 350C Automatic Transmissions

THM 250C and 350C transmissions produced by Chevrolet Parma and THM 350C transmission produced by Buick Motor Division have the production code stamped on the governor cover.

THM 350C Transmission (Buick)

The 700-R4 transmission produced by Chevrolet Toledo has a production code stamped on the right rear side of the pan rail.

PASSENGER CAR TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION NUMBER FOR FOR "SERVICE" USAGE

The following system will be used to identify service transmission assemblies. This number system applies to domestically produced complete service transmission assemblies only. Transmission cases are no longer identified. Manufacturing plants will number each service assembly as it is produced. The first letter will designate the GM division which produced the unit - "C" (Chevrolet). The second letter will indicate the type of unit "T" (transmission). The number following the letter will designate the model year - "3" (1983). The last five digits specify the service replacement sequence number. The group of numbers to be used by Chevrolet Manufacturing plants are as follows:

EXAMPLE: Number CT300175 designates Chevrolet transmission, year and 175th unit produced for service at Parma.

Upon completion of the serial sequence, the plant will reuse the above numbers using a letter prefix, such as A, B and C.

Hydra-Matic Division 00001 to 99999

Hydra-Matic Division Transmissions will be numbered with the letter "H" regardless of the GM division using the transmission.

Buick Motor Division 00001 to 99999

Buick Motor Division produced transmissions will be numbered with the letter "B" regardless of the GM Division using the transmission.

Muncie Manual Transmission Production Code Explanation

The production code number contains the source code, model year and build date.

3-Speed-(Saginaw Type)

The code is stamped on the left side of the case just below the side cover.

Muncie Truck 4-Speed

Stamped on the rear face of the transmission case just below the rear retainer.

New Process 205, 207 and 208 Model 4-Wheel Drive Transfer Case

The build date showing the month, day and year along with the Chevrolet part number is on a metal tag attached to the front face of the transfer case at PTO cover.

Truck Four-Speed Isuzu Transmission (77.5mm)

Right side of bell housing at 3:00 o'clock position five digit ink stamp transmission serial number. Below serial number is five digit ink date stamp.

TRUCK TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION NUMBER FOR "SERVICE" USAGE

The following system will be used to identify service transmission assemblies domestically produced. This number system applies to complete service transmission assemblies only. Transmission cases are no longer identified. Manufacturing plants will number each service assembly as it is produced. The first letter will designate the GM division which produced the unit - "C" (Chevrolet).

The second letter will indicate the type of unit - "T" (Transmission). The number following the letter will designate the model year - "3" (1983). The last five digits specify the service replacement sequence number. The group of numbers to be used by Chevrolet Manufacturing plants are as follows:

Hydra-Matic transmissions will be numbered with the letter "H" regardless of the GM Division using the transmission.

EXAMPLE: Number CT300175 designates Chevrolet transmission, year and 175th unit produced for service at Parma.

Upon completion of the serial sequence, the plant will re-use the above numbers using a letter prefix, such as A, B or C to indicate late production transmission; for example: CT2A0001.

Axles are manufactured by Chevrolet Buffalo, Chevrolet Gear and Axle, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and GM of Canada (McKinnon). Divisional Manufacturer code letters will be metal stamped on the axle tube adjacent to the carrier for field identification (see example). Letters and numerals 1/4" high are metal stamped on right front inboard side, 3" outboard of carrier or are located on a metal tag attached to cover bolt.

The Chevrolet produced axles use a prefix code stamped into the axle tube for axle code identification. Dana produced axles use the same prefix code as the Chevrolet axles, but they display these codes on a strip of tape attached to the outboard end of the axle tube.
