Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 4245 Pliers
    • J 6219 Oil Seal Installer
  1. Remove the power steering gear from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement Power Steering Gear Replacement.
  2. Mark the position of the pitman arm to the pitman shaft
  3. Remove the pitman arm from the pitman shaft. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 293954  Size: SH
  5. Remove the pitman shaft boot (1) and the dust seal (2).
  6. Remove the snap ring (3) using the J 4245 pliers.
  7. Loosely install the pitman arm and the nut onto the shaft.
  8. Turn the shaft back and forth as quickly as possible.
  9. Remove the following components:
  10. 8.1. The nut
    8.2. The pitman arm
    8.3. The washer (4)
    8.4. The seal (5)
  11. Inspect the pitman shaft seal surfaces for roughness or pitting.
  12. Replace the pitman shaft, if necessary.
  13. Remove all of the burrs in the housing before installing the new seal.
  14. Use a crocus cloth in order to clean the pitman shaft and the seal areas.

Installation Procedure

  1. Lubricate the new seals with power steering fluid. Refer to Recommended Fluids and Lubricants in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  2. Apply a single layer of tape to the pitman arm shaft in order to avoid any seal damage.

  3. Object Number: 293954  Size: SH
  4. Install the seal (5).
  5. Install the washer (4) with the J 6219 in order to seat the seal.
  6. Install the following components:
  7. 5.1. The snap ring (3)
    5.2. The dust seal (2)
    5.3. The pitman shaft boot (1)
  8. Align the mark between the pitman arm and the pitman shaft.
  9. Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement
  10. Install the power steering gear into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement
  11. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System in the C/K Truck service manual.
