Removal Procedure
Tools Required
- Remove the power steering gear from the vehicle. Refer to
Steering Gear Replacement

Steering Gear Replacement.
- Mark the position of the pitman arm to the pitman shaft
- Remove the pitman arm from the pitman shaft. Refer to
Pitman Arm Replacement
.
- Remove
the pitman shaft boot (1) and the dust seal (2).
- Remove the snap ring (3) using the J 4245
pliers.
- Loosely install the pitman arm and the nut onto the shaft.
- Turn the shaft back and forth as quickly as possible.
- Remove the following components:
- Inspect the pitman shaft seal surfaces for roughness or pitting.
- Replace the pitman shaft, if necessary.
- Remove all of the burrs in the housing before installing the new
seal.
- Use a crocus cloth in order to clean the pitman shaft and the
seal areas.
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the new seals with power steering fluid. Refer to Recommended
Fluids and Lubricants in Maintenance and Lubrication.
- Apply a single layer of tape to the pitman arm shaft in order
to avoid any seal damage.
- Install
the seal (5).
- Install the washer (4) with the J 6219
in order to seat the seal.
- Install the following components:

- Align the mark between the pitman arm and the pitman shaft.
- Install the pitman arm. Refer to
Pitman Arm Replacement
- Install the power steering gear into the vehicle. Refer to
Steering Gear Replacement
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering
System in the C/K Truck service manual.
