Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System, in SIR, in the 1999 C/K Service Manual.

  3. Object Number: 276599  Size: SH
  4. Remove the lower trim panel screws.
  5. Remove the lower trim panel.

  6. Object Number: 276681  Size: SH
  7. Remove the nuts from the forward steering column bracket.
  8. Lower the steering column.
  9. Remove the 4WD switch from the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
  10. Disconnect the connector.

  12. Remove the screws along the top side of the instrument panel cluster.
  13. Remove the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
  14. Disconnect all of the connectors from the back of the instrument panel accessory trim plate.

  16. Remove the screws from the HVAC control module.
  17. Position the HVAC controls outward.
  18. Disconnect the vacuum connector from the HVAC controls.

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the vacuum connector to the HVAC controls.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the HVAC controls to the instrument panel with the screws.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  5. Connect the harness connectors to the instrument panel accessory trim plate.

  6. Object Number: 276694  Size: SH
  7. Install the instrument panel accessory trim plate to the instrument panel.
  8. Install the instrument panel accessory trim plate screws.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  10. Connect the harness connector to the 4WD switch.
  11. Install the 4WD switch to the trim plate.

  13. Raise the steering column.
  14. Install the nuts to the forward mounting bracket.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  16. Install the lower trim panel.
  17. Install the lower trim panel screws.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 1.9 N·m (18 lb in).

  19. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System, in SIR, in the 1999 C/K Service Manual.
  20. Connect the negative battery cable.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable bolt to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
