  1. Place the automatic transmission in (P) park.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. With your foot pressing the brake, shift the transmission to each gear position and observe the indications.
  4. Place the transmission in P.
  5. Turn the engine OFF.

Do any position indications illuminate?

  1. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to RUN.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the instrument cluster connector cavity 15 and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 4

Locate and repair the open in the CKT 1020 (PNK) wire between the instrument panel fuse block and the instrument cluster.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

Connect a test lamp between the instrument cluster connector cavity 11 and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 5

Locate and repair the open in the CKT 451 (BLK/WHT) wire between the instrument cluster and ground.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Disconnect connector C1 at the transmission range (TR) switch.
  2. The TR switch is part of the P/N position switch.

  3. Connect a test lamp between the TR switch connector C1 cavity D and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 7

Go to Step 8

Replace the instrument cluster.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

Locate and repair the open in the CKT 150 (BLK) wire between the TR switch and ground G105.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the connector at the TR switch.
  3. The TR switch is part of the P/N position switch.

  4. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  5. Using a test lamp, inspect for continuity from cavity to cavity and from cavity to ground for the following wires:
  6. • CKT 776 (WHT)
    • CKT 773 (GRY)
    • CKT 772 (YEL)
    • CKT 771 (BLK/WHT)

Are any wires open or shorted to ground?

Go to Step 10

Locate and repair opens/shorts to ground in the following wires between the TR switch and the instrument cluster:

    • CKT 776 (WHT)
    • CKT 773 (GRY)
    • CKT 772 (YEL)
    • CKT 771 (BLK/WHT)

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Reconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to RUN.
  3. Refer to the PRNDL Module Input Test Table in Body and Accessories in the 1998 C/K Truck Service Manual.
  4. Connect two to four fused jumper wires from the listed TR switch connector cavities to ground as shown by the X.
  5. Repeat this for each TR column.

Are the indications correct as tested?
