Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 276612 Size: SH

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Move the front passenger seats rearward.
  3. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Restraints.
  4. Remove the screws and the Instrument Panel (IP) lower trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) Lower .
  5. Disconnect the yellow SIR connectors at the base of the steering column.
  6. Remove the bolt.
  7. Disconnect the steering column electrical connector.
  8. Disconnect the remainder of the electrical connectors.
  9. Disconnect the shift cable from the shift lever assembly.

  10. Remove the shift cable from the grommet on the side of the steering column.

  11. Remove the bolt from the upper-to-lower steering shaft connector.

  12. Remove the nuts from the lower steering column support bracket.

  13. Remove the nuts from the upper steering column support bracket.
  14. Remove the column from the vehicle.
  15. Remove the left hand and the right hand lower kick panels.
  16. Remove the hood release lever. Refer to Hood Release Lever Replacement .

  17. Remove the left hand and the right hand IP pivot bolts.

  18. Remove the defroster grill from the upper IP.

    19. Object Number: 276596 Size: SH
  19. Remove the upper IP retaining screws.
  20. Roll the IP assembly away from the cowl.
  21. Remove the IP assembly.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 276596 Size: SH
  1. Install and roll the IP carrier upwards.

    2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. Secure the IP carrier with the retaining screws.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the IP retaining screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  3. Snap the upper defroster grill into the upper IP carrier.

    4. Object Number: 290908 Size: SH
  4. Install the left hand and the right hand IP pivot bolts.

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the IP pivot bolts to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. Install the right hand and the left hand lower kick panels.
  6. Install the hood release lever. Refer to Hood Release Lever Replacement .

  7. Install the bolt at the upper-to-lower steering shaft connection.

    8. Tighten
    Tighten the steering column connector bolt to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  8. Position the steering column and install the nuts to the upper bracket.

    9. Tighten
    Tighten the steering column support bracket nuts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  9. Install the nuts to the lower steering column bracket.

    10. Tighten
    Tighten the steering column support bracket nuts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  10. Connect the shift cable to the shift lever assembly.

  11. Install the shift cable into the grommet on the side of the steering column.
  12. Connect the steering column electrical connector with the bolt.

    13. Tighten
    Tighten the steering column electrical connector bolt to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  13. Connect the yellow SIR connectors at the base of the column.
  14. Connect the remainder of the connectors.
  15. Install the IP lower trim panel with the screws.

    16. Tighten
    Tighten the IP lower trim panel screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  16. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Restraints.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.

    18. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable bolt to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
