New head bolts are being used on 1984 6.2L diesel engines in production. The bolt is available from WDDGM as P/N 14077193. Whenever a head is removed from a 1982-1983 engine, replace the head bolts with this new bolt. The new bolt provides a more even clamp load
Whenever head bolts are changed, be sure to reference 1983 Product Service Bulletin 6-217 dated Oct. 15, 1983 for correct installation procedure. Also be sure to use a teflon type sealing compound, such as P/N 1052080 or equivalent, on the bolt threads and under bolt head.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
