This bulletin has been prepared to assist in identifying 1985 model vehicles and components as described below:
Vehicle Identification 2-4
Fisher Body Plate 5
Corvette Body Plate 6
Light Duty Truck Service Parts Identification Sticker 6
1985 Service Parts Identification Label Locations 7
Engines 8-14
Transaxles 15-16
Transmissions 17-33
Axles 34-42
The vehicle identification number is visible through the windshield near the left door. On all pasenger cars, except Corvette, it is stamped on a plate located on the instrument panel. On Corvettes, it is on the left windshield pillar.
"C/K/G/S" and El Camino trucks display the VIN plate on the left hand side of the instrument panel area. On P 42 models, the plate is attached to the top of the radiator support, and on Motor Home Chassis P 32, to the dash and toe panel.
On Conventional Cabs, the VIN plate is mounted on the left door lock pillar. On School Bus Chassis, the plate is attached to the engine side of the cowl. On "P" models, it is located on top of the radiator support panel.
On the Chevrolet, El Camino and Monte Carlo, the body identification plate is located on the upper horizontal surface of the cowl plenum chamber. The Cavalier, Celebrity, Camaro, Citation, and Chevette plate is located on the upper horizontal surface of the radiator support.
The body and trim plate has been replaced by a service parts label located in the left hand compartment behind the drivers seat.
A Service Parts Identification Sticker is furnished for Light Duty trucks, except El Camino. It contains a complete listing of the vehicle identification number (VIN) wheel base and all production options used to assemble the vehicle, such as suspension, body equipment, engine, axle, transmission, tires, etc.
On "C/K", "G", and "S" models, this sticker is attached to the inner glove compartment. For "P" models, it is mailed separately to the dealer. On "G" models, the sticker is located on the inner hood panel surface.
The plants will install Service Parts Identification Labels at the following locations:
Carline Body Style Location -------- ---------- ---------

The manual and automatic transaxle each has its own code location and explanation.
The code is stamped on a diagonal case surface directly beneath the clutch lever cable reaction bracket.
The Muncie 76mm stamp consists of two (2) alpha and three (3) numeric characters as shown below:
-------- X 5 A 04 - - - -- Mfg. Source Calendar Code Model Year Month Produced Day Produced
X = Muncie 5=1985 A=Jan. K=July 01 = lst Day B=Feb. M=Aug. of Month C=Mar. P=Sept. D=Apr. R=Oct. 04 = 4th Day E=May S=Nov. of Month J=June T=Dec.
The code is located on a stamped metal tag adjacent to the shifter shaft on the transaxle.
The stamp is one of two formats as shown below, depending on manu- facturing location:
Willow Run, U.S.A. ------------------ 85 CV 8711 -- -- ---- Model Year Vehicle Application Sequence Code Number
J 222 A 5CB - --- - --- Source Julian Shift Model Number (Windsor) Build Date
THM 125/125C ------------- The THM 125/125c transmission is built at Ypsilanti, MI and Windsor, Canada. Transmissions built at Ypsilanti, MI use serial numbers; and beginning 1985 model year, Julian dates have been added to the nameplate. Transmissions built at Windsor, Canada use Julian dates. However, the transmission identification tag location is the same.
Four-speed transmissions built at Chevrolet plants will carry a production code number. The code number identifies the source, model year, month and day produced.
The transmission codes are located as follows:
The Muncie (cast iron case) transmission (Saginaw type) is stamped on the machined surface of the left side of the case just below the side cover.
The Muncie 70mm (aluminum case) transmission is stamped on the bottom center front of case.

PASSENGER CAR TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION NUMBER FOR "SERVICE" USAGE --------------------
The following system will be used to identify service transmission assemblies. This number system applies to domestically produced complete service transmission assemblies only. Transmission cases are no longer identified. Manufacturing plants will number each service assembly as it is produced. The first letter will designate the GM division which produced the unit - "C" (Chevrolet) . The second letter will indicate the type of unit "T" (transmission) . The number following the letter will designate the model year - "5" (1985). The last five (5) digits specify the service replacement sequence number. The group of numbers to be used by Chevrolet Manufacturing plants are as follows:
Plant Serial Sequence ----- --------------- Chevrolet - Parma Transmission Plant 00001 to 14999
Chevrolet - Muncie Transmission Plant 25000 to 44999
Example: Number CT-500175 designates Chevrolet transmission, year and 175th unit produced for service at Parma.
Upon completion of the serial sequence, the plant will reuse the above numbers using a letter prefix, such as A, B, and C.
Example: CT5AOO175
Hydra-Matic Division transmissions will be numbered with the letter "H" regardless of the GM division using the transmission.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
