The 76 mm and 89 mm four-speed transmissions may develop a 'stuck in gear' condition. This condition may be cause by the external shifter assembly slipping into neutral. This happens because the 1-2 shift lever is chamfered, allowing the selector pin to slide past the lever into a neutral position while the transmission remains in gear.
An improved shifter has been released eliminating the chamfer on the 1-2 shift lever. The shifter may be used on past models to replace worn or damaged shifter assemblies. VIN breakpoints of when the redesigned shifter was installed on 1985 vehicles and the shifter part number for each model are as follows:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
