Removal Procedure
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Drain the axle lubricant. Refer to
Lubricant Change
.
- Remove the rear axle assembly. Refer to
Rear Axle Replacement
.
- Remove the brake caliper brackets. Refer to
Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement
in Disc Brakes.
- Remove the wheel hubs, 10.50 inch axles only. Refer to
Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement
.
- Remove the rear axle cover housing and gasket. Refer to
Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement
.
- Remove the axle shafts. For the 8.6 inch and the 9.5 inch axles, refer to
Rear Axle Shaft Replacement
. For the 10.5 inch axle, refer to
Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement
.
- Remove the brake backing plates. Refer to
Rear Disc Brake Backing Plate Replacement
.
- Remove the differential assembly. Refer to
Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement
.
- Remove the drive pinion shaft yoke and the seal. Refer to
Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement
.
- Remove the drive pinion. Refer to
Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement
.
Installation Procedure
- Install the drive pinion. Refer to
Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement
.
- Install the differential assembly. Refer to
Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement
.
- Adjust the differential side bearing preload. Refer to
Differential Carrier Bearing Preload Adjustment
.
- Adjust the backlash. Refer to
Backlash Adjustment
.
- Perform a gear tooth contact pattern check. Refer to
Gear Tooth Contact Pattern Inspection
.
- Install the brake backing plates. Refer to
Rear Disc Brake Backing Plate Replacement
.
- Install the axle shafts. For the 8.6 inch and the 9.5 inch axle, refer to
Rear Axle Shaft Replacement
. For the 10.5 inch axle, refer to
Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement
.
- Install the rear axle housing cover and gasket. Refer to
Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement
.
- Install the brake caliper brackets. Refer to
Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement
in Disc Brakes.
- Install the wheel hub, 10.5 inch axle only. Refer to
Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement
.
- Install the rear axle. Refer to
Rear Axle Replacement
.
- Fill the axle with lubricant. Refer to
Lubricant Change
.
- Lower the vehicle.
