Subject:Service VME - Oil Pressure Gauge-Low Readings

Models:.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

SERVICE VME

Some customers may comment that their full-size pickup or utility, equipped an 8.1 liter ( RPO L18 ) engine, has oil pressure gauge readings lower than expected at hot engine idle ( needle drops from the 45-55 psi position at higher RPMs to below 20 psi at idle ). With the new 2003 electrical architecture, GM implemented a new smart instrument cluster that displays engine sensor information on the gauges using Class 2 serial data from the PCM and replaced the old electromechanical sensor with a new solid state analog oil pressure sensor. Dealers should not replace oil pumps and / or oil pressure sensors in an attempt to resolve this concern as the gauge is functioning as designed. Refer to bulletin # 03-08-49-009 dated June, 2003 (Service Manual Update). Service Information has been updated.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
