To prevent unnecessary warranty expenses, the following should be observed when diagnosing a fuel gauge reading empty, low fuel message displayed, and DTCs P0461, P1431, P1172 set after fuel tank is filled.
Before any repairs are made to correct this condition, verify the customer comments. You may find that this occurs when the customer keeps the engine running while they're filling the tank. This is considered a normal condition.
Advise the customer as to why this is happening and that cycling the ignition key will restore the fuel system to the correct operation. Also, advise them that running the engine while filling the tank is not recommended.
