Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 9290-01 Valve Lifter Remover (Slide Hammer Type)

  1. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  2. Remove the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  3. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 34571  Size: SH
  5. Remove the valve lifters one at a time. Place the valve lifters in an organizer rack in order to ensure that the valve lifters are later returned to the original bore during installation.
  6. A stuck valve lifter can be removed using J 9290-01 .

  7. Inspect the valve lifter body for scuffing and scouring.
  8. Check the mating bore in the block if the valve lifter body wall is worn or damaged.
  9. Check the fit of each valve lifter in its mating bore in the block. If the clearance is excessive, try a new valve lifter.
  10. The valve lifter roller must be smooth and even. If worn, pitted or damaged, then the mating camshaft lobe should also be checked.

Installation Procedure

    Important: 

       • Replace the engine oil and the oil filter if new valve lifters or a new camshaft is installed. Add engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent to the crankcase oil.
       • Replace all of the valve lifters if a new camshaft is installed.

  1. Install the valve lifters to the block. Lubricate the valve lifter and the body with engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent.
  2. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  3. Install the pushrod. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  4. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
