Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    •  J 24319-01 Universal Steering Linkage Puller
    •  J 29194 Steering Linkage Installer (14 mm)
  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2. Suitably support the vehicle with jack stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Important: Use the proper tool in order to separate all the ball joints.

  4. Remove the nuts from the Pitman arm ball stud.
  5. Remove the nuts from the drag link ball stud.

  6. Object Number: 245391  Size: SH
  7. Remove the drag link (9) from the Pitman arm using the J 24319-01 .
  8. Remove the drag link from the tie rod assembly (1) using the J 24319-01 .
  9. Inspect the following parts:
  10. 7.1. The threads on the tie rod for damage.
    7.2. The ball stud threads for damage.
    7.3. The ball stud seals for excessive wear.
  11. Clean the threads on the ball stud.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the drag link ball stud to the tie rod assembly (1).
  2. Install the drag link to the Pitman arm ball stud.
  3. Ensure that the seal is on the ball studs.
  4. Install the J 29194 .
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Tighten the Pitman arm ball stud in order to seat the tapers.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the Pitman arm ball stud to 62 N·m (48 lb ft).

  8. Remove the J 29194 .
  9. Install the nut to the Pitman arm ball stud.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 54 N·m (40 lb ft).

  11. Install the nut to the drag link ball stud.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 105 N·m (77 lb ft).

  13. Lower the vehicle.
