Cause

Action

The shear bolts are damaged.

Replace the shear bolts.

The housing assembly is damaged.

Replace the housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Assemble or Steering Column Housing - Assemble Floor Shift .

The shift linkage is not adjusted properly.

Adjust the shift linkage adjustment. Refer to Shift Cable Adjustment or Shift Cable Adjustment .

The brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system is damaged.

Repair or replace the BTSI as needed. Refer to BTSI - Disassemble or BTSI - Assemble.

The shaft assembly is damaged.

Replace the shaft assembly as needed. Refer to the appropriate procedure from the following list:

    • Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket- Disassemble
    • Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket- Disassemble Floor Shift
    • Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket- Assemble
    • Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket- Assemble Floor Shift

The ignition switch assembly is damaged.

Replace the ignition switch assembly. Refer to Ignition and Key Alarm Sw Assembly - Assemble or Ignition and Key Alarm Sw Assembly - Assemble Floor Shift .

The key is incorrect, bent, or twisted.

Replace the key. Refer to Key and Lock Cylinder Coding in General Information.

The park lock cable is not adjusted properly.

Adjust the park lock cable. Refer to the appropriate procedure in Parking Brake from the following list:

The shift lever is not in the P position.

Place the gear shift in the P position.
