The inflatable restraint IP module enable/disable switch is directly interfaced to the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) through CKT 353 and CKT 371. The SDM monitors the voltage at the passenger enable/disable input terminal 11, CKT 371. If the inflatable restraint IP module enable/disable switch is in the passenger ON position, the SDM receives approximately B+ (logic high) through CKT 371 at terminal 11. This causes the SDM to enable the passenger side air bag module for operation in the event of a severe frontal collision. The passenger air bag ON indicator lamp, located in the IP switch and controlled internally within the switch, now turns on. If the switch is in the passenger air bag OFF position, the input to the SDM is 0 volts, (logic low) on CKT 371. At the same time, the SDM is monitoring and controlling the passenger air bag OFF indicator lamp in the switch mechanism through CKT 353 at terminal 12. When the switch is in the passenger ON position, (CKT 371 at logic high) no current flows through the indicator lamp control circuit (CKT 353) from the switch and the voltage monitored at SDM terminal 12 is 0 volts (logic low). If the IP switch is in the passenger air bag OFF position, (CKT 371 at logic low) current should flow from the IP switch through the passenger air bag OFF indicator lamp and CKT 353 to the SDM. The SDM expects to see approximately battery voltage, (logic high) at terminal 12. After verifying the correct voltage at terminal 12, the SDM provides a ground to CKT 353 causing the passenger air bag off indicator lamp to illuminate and the voltage at terminal 12 to drop to near 0 volts, (logic low). This causes a slight delay in the illumination of the air bag OFF indicator light from when the IP switch is turned to the passenger air bag off position. The SDM now disables the passenger side air bag module operation in the event of a severe frontal collision. If the voltage levels monitored are incorrect on circuit 371 or circuit 353, the SDM will turn on the air bag warning lamp, store a current DTC, and enable the operation of the passenger side air bag module in the event of a sever frontal collision. The air bag warning lamp will remain on and the DTC stored as current for the rest of the ignition cycle in which the failure occurred.
DTC B1054 indicates the voltage signals received at terminal 11 and terminal 12 are not consistent with the circuit description.

When measurements are requested in this table, use the J 39200 DMM with the correct terminal adapter from the J 35616 Connector Test Adapter Kit. When an inspection for proper connection is requested, refer to Testing for Electrical Intermittents in Wiring Systems. When a wire, connector or terminal repair is requested, use the J-38125 Terminal Repair Kit and refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
When a DTC B1054 sets, the DTC remains current and the air bag waring lamp will remain on for the remainder of the current ignition cycle event if the problem is intermittent.

This test determines if the correct voltage is being supplied to the SDM terminal 11 on CKT 371. When the IP switch is in the ON position the voltage should read HIGH on the scan tool. This also indicates a good 1139 circuit. A reading of LOW indicates either an open, high resistance, or ground in CKT 371 or CKT 1139.
This test determines if the IP switch is receiving power on CKT 1139 and ground on CKT 150.
This test isolates a bad IP switch from a bad ground through CKT 150. Since the passenger air bag enable is HIGH the IP switch is receiving power on CKT 1139.
This test determines if the correct voltage is being supplied to the SDM terminal 12 on CKT 353. When the IP switch is in the ON position the voltage should read LOW. If the reading is HIGH a short to B+ on CKT 353 is indicated.
This test determines if the correct voltage is being supplied to the SDM terminal 12 on CKT 353. When the IP switch is in the OFF position the voltage should read HIGH. After a brief delay, the SDM grounds the circuit in order to illuminate the air bag OFF lamp which causes the voltage to read LOW. This test determines if the SDM passenger air bag OFF lamp driver command is being issued in an attempt to ground CKT 353. If the command is correct, an open of CKT 353 exists. If the command is not being issued, a short to B+ on CKT 371 or a faulty SDM is indicated.
This test determines if the correct voltage is being supplied to the SDM terminal 11 on CKT 371. When the IP switch is in the OFF position the voltage should read LOW. A HIGH reading indicates a short to B+ on CKT 371 which would prevent the SDM from attempting to control the air bag OFF lamp.

If the voltage is low, an open, high resistance, or short to ground is indicated on CKT 353. If the voltage is normal a faulty SDM is indicated.
This test determines if a CKT 353 problem is caused by a defective IP switch assembly or a wiring problem.
This test determines if the SDM passenger air bag OFF lamp driver command is being issued in an attempt to ground CKT 353. Step 22 is only performed if the system has tested OK up to this point. If DTC B1054 is stored as current and the system is testing OK, a faulty SDM is indicated.
A faulty connection caused by loose, damaged, or corroded terminals at the SDM could cause incorrect monitoring or control of the IP switch circuits by the SDM.
