Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 700979 Size: SH
  1. Remove the engine sight shield. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Sight Shield Replacement .
  2. Loosen the clamps at the throttle body and air cleaner.
  3. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.

    4. Object Number: 750529 Size: SH
  4. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer from the ignition coil electrical connector (2).
  5. Disconnect the ignition coil harness electrical connector (2).
  6. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector (3).

    7. Object Number: 470704 Size: SH

    Important: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

  7. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and ignition coils.

  8. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  9. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.

    10. Important: Valve rocker arm cover gaskets are reusable. Replace the gasket only if damaged.

  10. Inspect the valve rocker arm cover gasket for cuts or damage.
  11. Clean and inspect the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 8.1L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 470897 Size: SH
  1. Install a NEW valve rocker arm cover gasket if the gasket was removed from the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.

    4. Object Number: 677858 Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts in the sequence shown, using two passes.

    5. Tighten

        • Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts a first pass to 6 N·m (53 lb in).
        • Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts a final pass to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

    Important: Fully install the spark plug wire by pushing on the exposed end of the spark plug boot. Do not push the spark plug wire on to the spark plug by using the metal heat shield.

  5. Install the spark plug wires to the spark plugs and ignition coils.

    6. Object Number: 750529 Size: SH
  6. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector (3).
  7. Connect the ignition coil harness electrical connector (2).
  8. Install the CPA retainer to the ignition coil electrical connector (2).

    9. Object Number: 700979 Size: SH
  9. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  10. Tighten the clamps at the throttle body and air cleaner.

    11. Tighten
    Tighten the clamps at the throttle body and air cleaner to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  11. Install the engine sight shield. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Sight Shield Replacement .
